Market Square, Knoxville

4.7
Located in the center of downtown, Market Square is the bull’s-eye of the city in every sense. Founded as the regional farmers' market in the 19th century, the square was a common ground where locals and visitors from all walks of life congregated. After a period of decline, the area was revitalized, and today it’s a bustling pedestrian mall, dotted with restaurants, bars, and shops. Try some of the local or international cuisine, see a concert or street performance, and admire the works of resident artists and craftspeople. The historic square is also the perfect place to stroll with your pet or sit and people-watch. • Market square is the best that downtown (and arguable all of) Knoxville has to offer. There are a lot of nice shops, good food, and entertainment. Right now there is a big ice skating rink set up in the middle, which is always a lot of fun. There are farmers markets on Wednesday and Saturdays during certain months and holiday craft markets through December on Saturdays. You can also catch some really good street performers around here.
  • Pleasant city square with some nice restaurants and shops. They also have a nice farmer's market here. This and Gay Street are some of the nicest public places in downtown Knoxville. This area also has an interesting history in the city. It was first used as a market place for the city, but now serves as a public square with places to eat and shop.
  • Market Square is not only a modern, open air shopping center and event area, but it also represents the heart and history of Knoxville. It has been written about in modern travel and business journals as well as American literature, including James Agee. It was purported in his novel as an egalitarian place where everyone could come shop at the old Market building (no longer standing). It has kept and enhanced that spirit today with events like Movies on Market Square, multiple festivals, Shakespeare on the Square and the open air ice skating rink that runs late November to early January (as well as countless other events). Buskers add a lively flourish to each day's visit.
  • It's always fun to visit market square! I highly recommend renting a night or weekend in one of the lofts above the shops/restaurants. They're beautiful! There is so much to do and new events listed frequently. Market square is one of my favorite places in Knoxville, for sure!
  • Really nice atmosphere. Lovely place to walk around. Good farmers market. I always enjoy it here and they have fun events. Parking garage around the corner has always had an open spot for me.
