Chatfield Hollow State Park is a Connecticut state park located in the town of Killingworth. The park offers hiking trails, a swimming beach, trout fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, and picnicking areas. Park attractions include Indian caves, historic sites, a restored water wheel, and a reproduction covered bridge. The Oak Lodge Nature Center is open seasonally and offers nature programs and information about the park.GeologyAll the bedrock in the park consists of a type of gneiss called Monson Gneiss, a granitic pluton formed by the subduction of the ocean floor of the Iapetus Ocean under the North American continent; this was caused by the African Plate and Eurasian Plate. The Iapetus Ocean continued to close after the formation of the pluton, and the eventual collision of Avalonia with North America and subsequent intense pressure and heat caused the metamorphism of the granite into gneiss. The eventual erosion of the rock layers above over millions of years then exposed the rock seen on the surface today.Monson Gneiss is a medium to coarse-grained rock, light in color, and is mainly composed of the minerals plagioclase, quartz and biotite. In some places, trace amounts of garnet, epidote or magnetite can be observed.Plan your Chatfield Hollow State Park visit and explore what else you can see and do in Killingworth using our Killingworth day trip planner .

Good for hiking and gets you onto well-used narrow trails with blazes, but not signage. Take a picture of the map at the entrance and use that if you are hiking. Did 2 miles of the moderate level trail with a 4-year-old and he lived it. Also has some nice campsites. Kid-friendly summer swimming has a bouy-marked beach on the river. Family reuniuon/birthday party space is at reserved pavilion. Beautiful in Autumn!!! Nature center needs major work and updating! No staff present at 2pm on weekend before Fourth of July😏
Loved the park. Great trails. Check out the blue trail
This park is very well rounded! As a kid I loved climbing among some of the trails' rocky ledges and as a dog owner I've thoroughly enjoyed the versatility of long, easy walks or hiking rough terrain. Parking can be tough, summers do seem crowded, but overall it's a sweet, well maintained little state park.
Beautiful state park that is great for hiking, walking, fishing, swimming. It's always full of people. The water wheel is always a nice walk that the kids enjoy.
Great spot to hike and bike. Paved road around pond and river plus more challenging hikes up rocky hills on both sides. Beautiful in the fall. Many spots to picnic and grill. Only tend to go off season so not sure about the swimming but there is a beach. Off season perfect spot for little ones first solo bike ride.
