West Martello Tower, Key West

#8 of 24 in Parks in Key West
Scenic Walking Area · Hidden Gem · Garden
Located near the beach and just off a popular bike path, West Martello Tower is the site of a historic fort that's been converted to botanic gardens. The fort's ruins act as a foundation for plant growth, with potted orchids along their base. A single tower left intact gives visitors a view over the adjacent beach and ocean, while the paths around the tower are thick with tropical plant life. Look for the Autograph Tree, where visitors sign their names in the leaves. Entry is free, but donations are accepted to help with upkeep. • An old Civil War fort that overlooks the ocean has been turned into a beautiful botanical garden. Admission is free but donations are accepted (and needed). Enjoy!  more »
  • We love this place, so much so we were married there four years ago. The plants, flora, history and location are fantastic for a quick stop off while seeing all the other things to see in that area...  more »
  • We enjoyed a visit here for a change of pace. It’s a short visit activity with pretty flowers in summary. A little annoying on a hot day with required mask .  more »
  • Love this place. Beautiful gardens mixed with interesting ruins of the old west martello tower. Parking is easy. Adjacent to other fun spots to see and spend time at. Sad to see that the giant banyan tree over the arch did not survive the hurricane a couple years ago.
  • Gardens were beautiful. Cute little walk that’s great for couples or families. It’s free and only took us about 20 minutes to see everything.
  • Amazing place with interesting history. The key west garden club has transformed this fort into an amazing little slice of paradise. There is a butterfly area in which we saw tons of Monarch butterflies, there's a couple different cacti, a fountain, and many flowering shrubs. There is no cost to explore the fort but they do like donations. The donations go towards keeping the fort in good shape. We recommend this place! It's beautiful!
  • You must go and visit the Butterfly garden!!! There are beautiful small and quaint places in key west away from the hustle bustle drunken duval street. This tower houses one of the most gorgeous gardens inside a once used fortification. The lady who runs this place is very sweet and you can host events here. Now back to the butterfly garden. Its nestled in the back past the water foundation and is a circular garden with various plants that attract monarchs. Sit on the benches and enjoy the breeze from the water and watch these monarchs fly around you nonstop.
  • Great and quiet place to visit. Flower garden is very nice! So many breeds of plants. There's a small butterfly garden, great views of the beach and lots of roosters just hanging out. It's free to enter so it's your option to give a donation.
