West Martello Tower, Key West

4.8
#7 of 13 in Historic Sites in Key West
Garden Historic Site
Located near the beach and just off a popular bike path, West Martello Tower is the site of a historic fort that's been converted to botanic gardens. The fort's ruins act as a foundation for plant growth, with potted orchids along their base. A single tower left intact gives visitors a view over the adjacent beach and ocean, while the paths around the tower are thick with tropical plant life. Look for the Autograph Tree, where visitors sign their names in the leaves. Entry is free, but donations are accepted to help with upkeep. • Wonderful historic fort on the beach here in Key West. Now a beautiful spot run by a non profit Key West Garden Club.
  • I bring all out of town guests here and they love it. The fact that it is completely free in Key West is a bonus. It's right next door to the gorgeous African cemetery, the AIDS memorial, and a nice meal at Salute on the beach.
  • This is a quiet and natural place. The admition is free.
  • They created a beautiful garden inside this small fort. It's free and a must see.
  • Beautiful garden, good seminars too
