Lookout Historic Site
Explore maritime artifacts without getting wet, and learn how the locals made a living out of salvaging at Key West Shipwreck Museum. Throughout history, many ships have been lost in the treacherous waters off Key West. For a while, pulling in hauls from shipwrecks was the basis of the island's economy. At this museum, an actor portraying Asa Tift, the 19th-century salvaging baron, takes you on a tour of the building, which is a reproduction of Tift's warehouse. Many of the artifacts were carried by the merchant ship Isaac Allerton that sank in 1856 and yielded the greatest-ever booty from Key West shipwrecks. You'll also see artifacts recovered from other ships. Don't forget to climb up the 20 m (65 ft) tall wreck-spotting tower. Buy tickets at discounted prices online. • Went here on the ghosts and gravestones tour and wasn't very impressed. It's ok but nothing that compelling. That said, I am not sure that we saw all there was to see and the tour wasn't very good. Ma...  more »
  • This was a very cool place to visit and a lot of info,, items to see, and history. One of the many spots to see at mallory square.  more »
  • The tour begins with a rather corny introduction but if you're interested in history, it's very informative. All of the artifacts in the museum are from various shipwrecks on the reefs. There's also a...  more »

  • If you do nothing else in Key West but eat pie, go here. Go there and be awed. This is a great way to run a small museum. Kids, adults, and your bored rmo cousin Lenny will all find this place and their amazing costume-clad museum docents entertaining. History should always be this much fun.
  • Special authentic atmosphere.. nice option for rainy days. We bought an onlime combined tickets for the shipwreck museum and the aquarium... saved few bucks.
  • This is not a museum as much as someone's small, common item collection. The history on the items is made up in many cases and the actors embellishments are insulting, they will lie to your face (see the 'silver' bar). I had high hopes and was disappointed. There is much more authentic shipwreck history in key west, save your money on this place.
  • This was such a disappointment. Please do not waste your time and especially money with this place. We started the "tour" outside in the heat. The guy telling the story talked so fast that you couldn't understand him. He was like an auctioneer barking at you. We finally went inside and was looking forward to cooling off, which was also a disappointment. The air they advertised wad also nowhere to be found. We had the same guy goingon with his story but by then, I lost all interest. We were told to look around and take our time to see everything. There's NOT much to see!!! It was a bunch of dusty old junk that could have been bought at a garage sale or flea market. There were nails, bottles and some padlocks. I know there was the look out rhst might have redeemed part of this tour but it'sa very long way up and I'm not physically able to do those stairs. If there was a handicap access, it was not offered to us. We were out of the museum within 10 minutes. The guy stopped us and we expressed our disappointment but he really didn't have anything to say except thry were 2.00 cheaper than a competitor. Really??? Not really the right answer. I should have asked for our money back but I didn't. This place felt like a scam. I guess thru are true pirates and stole from us!!!
  • My husband and I loved this museum! It is a must if you enjoy history.
