Explore maritime artifacts without getting wet, and learn how the locals made a living out of salvaging at Key West Shipwreck Museum. Throughout history, many ships have been lost in the treacherous waters off Key West. For a while, pulling in hauls from shipwrecks was the basis of the island's economy. At this museum, an actor portraying Asa Tift, the 19th-century salvaging baron, takes you on a tour of the building, which is a reproduction of Tift's warehouse. Many of the artifacts were carried by the merchant ship Isaac Allerton that sank in 1856 and yielded the greatest-ever booty from Key West shipwrecks. You'll also see artifacts recovered from other ships. Don't forget to climb up the 20 m (65 ft) tall wreck-spotting tower. Buy tickets at discounted prices online. • Nice, well set but it's not a museum. Collect objects and vestiges of the shipwrecks of the finds at sea. Nice ascent into the wooden tower. A little pricey. Paid parking garage not far.

  • My siblings and I ended up here quite by accident, but it was a nice (and comfortably cool) diversion on Mallory Square. I learned a lot about how shipwrecks were a way to get rich, which a few took a...  more »
  • I wish there were more artifacts to view...not sure I'd recommend a visit as it felt kind of like a tourist trap.  more »

  • If you do nothing else in Key West but eat pie, go here. Go there and be awed. This is a great way to run a small museum. Kids, adults, and your bored rmo cousin Lenny will all find this place and their amazing costume-clad museum docents entertaining. History should always be this much fun.
  • The employees were friendly. It is cheap to get into. The establishment massive but it isn't tinny either. Stairs required, no elevator. It starts with a guided tour eho is vety friendly and informed and ends halfway through the museum. The museum is full of history that there is very little space that doesn't have any. There is a looking tower that allows people to see all of old town key west. At the end of the meusm there is a 15 minute optional video that people can watch. I suggest the watch it. It's not long, it's entertaining while being factual. Key west has a large shipwreck history. I highly suggest.
  • This is a fun little attraction. Rich in the history of the area it was fun and entertaining for all ages.
  • Very interesting how Key West was started and the best view of the entire island.. Great pictures from way above..
  • A really neat place to visit if you're a history fan & are interested in the treasures found.
