Fort East Martello Museum, Key West

Art Museum History Museum
Sink your teeth into local history at Fort East Martello Museum, an outstanding example of Martello style military architecture. Construction on the fort began in 1862 by the U.S Army, intended to protect Key West against a Confederate sea assault. Remarkably, the Union-controlled island saw no battle during the Civil War and the fort was abandoned unfinished as the war drew to a close. In 1950 the fort opened as a museum, preserving a collection of relics from the Civil War. The museum also features exhibits about local cigar-manufacturing industries, folk art, and the infamous Robert the Doll, a haunted doll from the collection of artist Robert Eugene Otto. • I had wanted stop here for years! But I would miss out...they close at 4. The cashier was so helpful explaining how we should take the fort in! The fort is so nicely persevered! Well worth a visit and...  more »
  • Interesting place - didn't love the Robert the doll feature - was creepy. On the way out at night we took many pictures and believe we got a ghost on film - quiet museum but interesting!  more »
  • Were unable to go into this museum as we arrived too late. A lot to see outside though. We had already read about "Robert the Doll" and his many escapades so were disappointed in missing "meeting" him...  more »

  • This is a great spot to visit..full of history and exhibits. Its hot inside. No AC but worth it. You can purchase water inside. New local artist exhibit has AC. Also you can meet Robert the doll. Great story on him..must see!
  • This was a pretty cool place. Robert the Doll was doing his things. GF and I were the only two there so it was cool to have place to ourselves and explore.
  • This is one of many cool historical forts in Key West. It's a very fun place to visit and there is some cool educational content here. The must interesting thing is probably Robert the Doll (who's supposedly haunted). It's not quite as good as Fort Zachary Taylor, but it's definitely a good place to kill some time.
  • Great local museum. You get a good history of key west. It won't take long to get through all the exhibits, but spend some time with Robert. The central tower offers great views and is a perfect picture spot. It is right next to the airport so go when you land or before you leave. It is well worth the low admissions price.
  • Neat experience. A must for a first time visit to Key West
