Fort East Martello Museum, Key West

4.1
#10 of 21 in Museums in Key West
Sink your teeth into local history at Fort East Martello Museum, an outstanding example of Martello style military architecture. Construction on the fort began in 1862 by the U.S Army, intended to protect Key West against a Confederate sea assault. Remarkably, the Union-controlled island saw no battle during the Civil War and the fort was abandoned unfinished as the war drew to a close. In 1950 the fort opened as a museum, preserving a collection of relics from the Civil War. The museum also features exhibits about local cigar-manufacturing industries, folk art, and the infamous Robert the Doll, a haunted doll from the collection of artist Robert Eugene Otto. We deeply do apologize and hope you give us your forgiveness, and I hope you have a wonderful rest of the year with many more to come.
