Fort East Martello Museum, Key West
(4/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Sink your teeth into local history at Fort East Martello Museum, an outstanding example of Martello style military architecture. Construction on the fort began in 1862 by the U.S Army, intended to protect Key West against a Confederate sea assault. Remarkably, the Union-controlled island saw no battle during the Civil War and the fort was abandoned unfinished as the war drew to a close. In 1950 the fort opened as a museum, preserving a collection of relics from the Civil War. The museum also features exhibits about local cigar-manufacturing industries, folk art, and the infamous Robert the Doll, a haunted doll from the collection of artist Robert Eugene Otto. • the view from the top is amazing and Robert the doll was very creepy and interesting. We went here just to see Robert the doll.
  • Lots of History about the keys and Key West. You can learn more than you think just by taking a walking tour of this place. Even on a hot day it's cool inside. and a Great View form the roof outside.
  • Took the Ghost tour, which included a stop over at the Fort, which was pretty hockey. Robert the doll was the center of attraction. I was not impressed. Some old tomb stones displayed were very intere...  more »

  • This is a great spot to visit..full of history and exhibits. Its hot inside. No AC but worth it. You can purchase water inside. New local artist exhibit has AC. Also you can meet Robert the doll. Great story on him..must see!
  • This was a pretty cool place. Robert the Doll was doing his things. GF and I were the only two there so it was cool to have place to ourselves and explore.
  • Great local museum. You get a good history of key west. It won't take long to get through all the exhibits, but spend some time with Robert. The central tower offers great views and is a perfect picture spot. It is right next to the airport so go when you land or before you leave. It is well worth the low admissions price.
  • Interesting place to visit. Good exhibits. Unusual art
  • Key West is full of history and the fort is no exception. Be sure to say hi to Robert the doll while your there.
