Capt. Tony's Saloon, Key West

4.1
“I went down to Captain Tony’s to get out of the heat….” Who is this “Captain Tony” Jimmy Buffett immortalizes in his famous hit, The Last Mango in Paris? Key West’s and your, and our, own Capt. Tony Tarracino, that’s who!

Captain Tony- what a great life and legacy. From his humble beginnings in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to his even more humble arrival in Key West on a milk truck from Miami in 1946, Capt Tony lived life to its fullest and made countless friends around the world for himself, his family, and for his adopted home, Key West.

On this piece of coral and sand called Key West where he lived for over 60 years, Anthony “Captain Tony” Tarracino was a fisherman, charter captain extraordinare (his famous shark catch is in the Smithsonian), owner of the renowned Captain Tony’s Saloon, city mayor, and friend of literary masters Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, and Shel Silverstein among countless others and best of all, a wonderful husband and father to all of his wives and children. He has been the subject of feature films, songs and books. He appeared on national television more times than anyone can count.

Come celebrate with the Captain’s friends and family celebrating the life of Capt. Tony at the first annual Capt. Tony Days in Key West, August 11 -14, 2011.

  • We go here when in town and love the music usually. It is a cool unique bar check it out. Location is nearby to duval street  more »
  • Swaggered in on a Sunday night after hitting a few places beforehand. This was like walking through a portal into 1984-in a good way. Live music, dark atmosphere, great rum punch- I was 24 years old.....  more »
  • This is the original location of Sloppy Joe’s and is where Hemingway did most of his drinking when he lived in Key West. I liked this place much better than the new Sloppy Joe’s. The bar itself is...  more »

  • Historic saloon. Take Fast Eddie's great haunted pub crawl to learn some fascinating information. Ask about it. Many famous people drank here. Very famous people! I had a delicious mixed drink and was able to take it out in a plastic cup. Just like in New Orleans! I live this bar and it's history. So casual and fun. Off of Duval. We parked our rented bicycles across the street. The atmosphere is part-time, but just my kind of people. Truly a nice evening out.
  • It tries too hard to be a grunge bar. Hundreds of old bras hanging from the rafters is not a pretty site. Although the bar staff isn't rude, good luck getting them to crack a smile, let alone speak. The live music was good so three stars.
  • So I've heard about this place many times, I learned a little bit about the history before I stopped into the place because it was really quite fascinating to learn about. The drinks were reasonably priced, the environment is exactly what you would expect in Key West, and most importantly the place is steeped in history and if you take a few minutes to walk around and do a little reading while you're enjoying your drink you will have a very good experience. Do yourself a favor and check out the hanging tree and the tombstone in the billiards room. :-)
  • Great bartenders and a lot of fun. I went to so many bars the week I was in Key West I don't know why this one stands out but it does. ON night 2 several of us said "let's go back to captain Tony's. I had so much fun in this place. I remember it sometimes being very crowded yet the bartenders kept us happy with quick drink orders. Also, the view out to the street is fantastic if you want sit and watch for a bit. Plus, I danced here and laughed and just a very fun time with very cool people.
  • I've been a fan of Capt. Tony's for many years. Just went back for the first time in 10 years. And the first time since Tony passed away and the place was sold. Much to my regret, it seems the spirit has left, it's just another loud (but oddly not overly full) bar trading on Tony's name. Just as an example, on a Saturday night, prime time, the band plays a horrible Stone's cover. The lead singer yells "let's keep it rocking!" and launches into....... Sweet Caroline?
