#9 of 13 in Historic Sites in Key West
Garden Historic Site
Step back in time at Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, the former home of maritime pilot and master wrecker Capt. John H. Geiger. The grand property, built by the captain in the 1840s, has been restored to its former glory. A guided tour of the house, which is filled with antiques, provides a glimpse into the comfortable lives that wealthy Key West families enjoyed during the mid 19th century. Once the tour is over, you are free to explore the house and 0.4 hectare (1 acre) tropical gardens independently. The gardens are said to have been visited by the naturalist J.J. Audubon in 1832, who then used images from the gardens in his drawings. Be sure to read the information panels throughout the property to discover more about the Geiger family and Key West society in the 1800s. • While the house was beautiful and very well done it really had nothing to do with Audubon. Yes they did have a good number of his prints exhibited but he never lived, painted or even was to the house....  more »
  • We didn't expect to visit but when we did a very kind man at the gift shop led the way and when I mentioned my son is writing a book and is quite a 9 year old naturalist, after the tour he had a book ...  more »

  • The staff here is incredible and friendly. With only two busses a day they are always on time. The airport has a good restaurant and bar of your waiting too.
  • House nice if you into history of the family that lived in the house and the restoration that was done. I went as it said tropical garden it's more like someone's backyard garden nothing impressive at all. They should change the name to leave that part out. Normally I don't leave a negative comment but sorry it was misleading. However, the staff is very nice and all. I think even the owner knew I wasn't happy she's like oh back already. I said yep thank you and left.
  • Gorgeous surroundings; gorgeous home; tremendous information.
  • A beautiful part of American history here in Key West. Tranquil and inspiring.
  • One of the highlights of my trip to Key West. We loved exploring the gardens before and after the house tour! Our docent for the day was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area and was very engaging. It was amazing to be able to see some first edition Audubons as well!
