Step back in time at Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, the former home of maritime pilot and master wrecker Capt. John H. Geiger. The grand property, built by the captain in the 1840s, has been restored to its former glory. A guided tour of the house, which is filled with antiques, provides a glimpse into the comfortable lives that wealthy Key West families enjoyed during the mid 19th century. Once the tour is over, you are free to explore the house and 0.4 hectare (1 acre) tropical gardens independently. The gardens are said to have been visited by the naturalist J.J. Audubon in 1832, who then used images from the gardens in his drawings. Be sure to read the information panels throughout the property to discover more about the Geiger family and Key West society in the 1800s. We highly recommend visiting this house if you have 1 hr to spare. We saw lizards running around all over the beautiful garden. The brief history rundown was super informative and interesting. The house itself is in good condition and the replicas of each room makes it feel like you’re transported in time.

Loved the tour and all the amazing items inside as well as the beautiful paintings. A must for people who love history!

The price was reasonable. Do not go for the gardens as they were underwhelming. However we did very much enjoy the history and art within the main home which contained some wonderful drawings and sketches of local birds and flora. If you are into the homes history or into birding then I would imagine it would be a 5 star experience.

This house has long been a popular attraction in Key West, and after numerous visits to this popular destination city, finally paid the admission to go inside. It’s a lovely period building and lush garden property filled with many original etchings, including some for sale. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s his home, that he stayed in the house while documenting the local birds, or that any of the furnishings are his. No, in fact he had no actual connection to this home. He merely admired a tree that was on the neighboring property and asked the owner if he could have a branch. That tree branch was featured in a bird etching, and that’s how the Geiger - Smith House became associated with Audubon. A local preservationist made sure the home was spared by tying Audubon to the property, and thank goodness she did. Admission and donations keep it beautiful for all to admire and peek into a different Key West history. Go there to learn about the famous illustrator, see his amazing etchings and see an historic Key West home with period furniture.

As someone who loves birds, this museum was a treat! I loved seeing the first edition prints of Audubon’s work.
