John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Key Largo

4.2
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a Florida State Park located on Key Largo in Florida. It includes approximately 70 nautical square miles (240 km²) of adjacent Atlantic Ocean waters. The park is approximately 25 miles in length and extends 3 miles into the Atlantic Ocean. It was the first underwater park in the United States. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 1972. The primary attractions of the park are the coral reefs (such as Molasses Reef) and their associated marine life.

In Fiscal Year 2004 the park had more than a million visitors, making it the most popular park in the Florida State Parks system. The Florida Keys and the Flower Garden Banks in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast are the only living coral reef formations in the continental United States.

  • Was excited to come here based on reviews. Got here and found two tiny beaches and the water is full of sargassum and a nasty film. Glad we didn’t go in because just as we were about to, Ranger came.....  more »

  • What would my friends on a snorkeling trip and it was very impressive. The staff were amazing very professional very kind very happy. I was expecting it to feel more touristy and it wasn't it was great we had amazing people on the trip and everybody was calm and polite. We were taken to the protected Reef it was absolutely amazing they took us to where it was not crowded and we got to spend over an hour and a half in the water which was fantastic. We had an amazing day it was very impressive I highly recommend this to anybody :-) thank you everyone that does the trips you do an amazing job
  • We stayed here while we explored the Keys. It was beautiful, clean, and convenient! There are boat ramps, excursions, a museum, campground, and so much more! Be prepared though; throughout southern Florida they have an insect that is like a mosquito but it leaves small blisters instead. Just make sure the bug spray is handy. Definitely would recommend!
  • Fun place. Great tour guides for the snorkeling. Bathrooms were clean and well lit at night. Camping was only okay though. Probably great if you have an RV. Not as much for tent camping. The ground is hard and gravelled, making putting tents up difficult or impossible in some locations/sites. The trees were overgrown and covering the on-site grill, making it unusable. They do offer a community social area with firewood available, which was nice, even if no one seemed to be using it. Also, unless you make reservations, you may have to move campsites if you stay for more than one night, as the walk up sites are one night only, I guess. Overall, a nice park with lots to do and friendly staff.
  • Beautiful park. We went primarily for a snorkel trip. Boat was in good shape and captains as well as others aboard were very good, even giving lessons to the novice snorkelers. Very knowledgeable about the park and very conscious of protecting the reefs. Would go again in a heartbeat!
  • An authentic place to spend the day with your family. A few fun activities such as Glassbottom boat tours or kayak. Not expensive. As at any water drop around Florida, they put the famous "Beware the Gator" sign here too :) but overall we enjoyed our day and the only danger was the food we ate too much.
