Founded in September, 1898 as "Strong & Johnstone Co." by Ketchikan pioneers Henry C. Strong and Frederick C. Johnstone, it was renamed Tongass Trading Company in 1900, and incorporated in October, 1901. At the turn of the century, Tongass Trading Company supplied the miners and mining camps throughout Southeast Alaska. In the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, Tongass Trading Company provided supplies, gear and storage to the commercial halibut fishing fleet, as well as household goods, clothes and groceries to local residents. In the mid and latter part of the 20th century, Tongass also supplied the booming logging camps of Southeast Alaska.

Through the years, Tongass Trading Company has kept pace with progress and the changing industries of Alaska. Today, Tongass Trading Company supplies commercial and sport fishing gear, hardware, furniture and clothing to industry and residents of Southeast Alaska. Additionally, Tongass Trading Company is a popular stop for cruise ship travelers looking for uniquely Alaskan curios, gifts and souvenirs.

  • Great prices! Definitely the place to buy all of your souvenirs for the trip.
  • If there would be a minus 5 that's how i would rate my experience at this store today. I work on ships in the shops and we privide a very high level of service. This shop reached today the lowest service level i could get. I had about 7 pieces of clothing selected to try on and when i asked to get a fitting room i was asked to leave my hand bag out...i asked to bring my hand bag in...i even unzipped it and showed i hv nothing in there and they could check inside when i check out. The sales person gave me a sarcastic look and said she will keep my bag at the register. So i stupidly accepted. Entering the fitting room i realused this is the best example of poor service. This shop makes u leave ur belongings...credit card...phones wth them while u try low quality clothing on sale. My bag was left unsupervised in a mess at the register...easily reachable by any stranger while the staff was chatting away personal stories. Accross the road there is a store owned by the same company and when i went to complain about my experience i was told they afe very sorry and their company policy is to ask guests to leave their bags out when they go in the fitting room but maybe they could have allowed me to bring mine in because it was not so big! Really people!!!???
