Salmon Capital of the World
The narrow city of Ketchikan clings to the bluffs that form Revillagigedo Island's southwestern shore. Though several kilometers long, the city is never more than 10 blocks wide. In fact, many of its more than 8,000 residents have built homes and businesses on stilts over the water or up on the steep slopes. The city is known for its world-class salmon, bustling harbors, rich Native Alaskan culture, and striking natural scenery. A creek flows through the town and the surrounding forestland, which is home to a national monument. With an average rainfall of 390 cm (153 in) per year, expect rain during your vacation, but don't worry--locals don't let it dampen their spirit; life continues as normal during downpours. Whether you only want to go to Ketchikan, or have a whole adventure planned, Inspirock has you covered with our user-friendly United States road trip site.

Where to stay in Ketchikan

For a small city, Ketchikan boasts a surprisingly diverse array of accommodations. A downtown hotel is the best option for those who want to stay within walking distance of the city’s restaurants, bars, stores, and attractions, plus it offers proximity to the water. If you have access to a car, you can save a few dollars and enjoy some of Alaska's famous scenery by staying farther out of town. The area's selection of bed and breakfasts includes a number of quirky establishments full of character. The surrounding Tongass National Forest has a well-equipped campground and RV park.
