Tunnels Beach, Kauai

Categories: Beaches, Nature & Parks, Outdoor Activities
Inspirock Rating:
4.4/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web
Views of canyons and lush green maquis sculpt the backdrop at Tunnels Beach. The crescent-shaped beach and its large reef provide an excellent spot for diving and snorkeling, as the reef creates a barrier from the strong currents arriving from the north shore. Admire the jagged canyons and deep valleys eroded over time due to heavy rainfall. The volcanic formation of the island, visible through the underwater caverns formed from lava tubes, makes the beach an ideal snorkeling spot. Surfers can also benefit from the impressive waves beyond the reef. Try scuba diving and explore the inner and outer coral reefs, home to immense marine life, including sea turtles. • Hard to get to and no parking, but worth the effort. Take lunch, snorkling equipment, There is shade, restrooms and lifeguards. Restaurants close by.
  • Not a must see. Did find a few people camping near the beach. Might be good for surfers. Not a beach for a leisurely swim.
  • It was very rough when we were there. The coast guard put the warning signs on the beach. The waves were very high. I walked the beach and took some pictures then left.
  • Amazing place, parking is extremely difficult for two reasons. First, it's difficult to find a spot and second because it's a narrow street.
  • There is on small side road that you cab fit maybe 6 cars. The other supposed road to park on is private, but folks don;t care. I wish people would act like it was the neighborhood they live in instead of have no respect.
  • Be careful not to tred on people's private property. Be respectful, and courteous, and everything will be fine. There is only limited parking, so arrive early. Don't park illegally, you will be ticketed. With all that said... This is a must see location. Beautiful beach, nice views. Do NOT stand on the coral, but swim around it.
  • We visited here in Aug 2013 with Kauai Down Under Dive Team. It was a bit of a drive to get to from Poipu on the far south of the island, and parking was impossible to find - ended up driving up the road to the public beach and walking back along the shore 14 minutes to the dive site. However, once there, it was a great spot to dive. Some of the more experienced divers in our group (of 8) found it a bit unchallenging (those with over 300 dives), but I thoroughly enjoyed the dives here. It made me feel like we were in an oversized aquarium swimming along the tubes like little human fishies. The sea turtle cleaning station was cool and liked going into the little caves and caverns. I liked it.
  • Parking is extremely limited but this is a snorkeling spot you shouldn't pass up.
