Sleeping Giant Trail, Kapaa
(4.8/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
You'll be treated to views of lush green plants, far off mountains, and the ocean in the distance when you hike Sleeping Giant Trail. Named because the mountain from a distance looks like the profile of a giant lying down, this 6.4 km (4 mi) trail (roundtrip) takes you through wide, grassy pastures, across a bridge, and over a stream. It is not for the unfit--you'll face an elevation gain of 305 m (1,000 ft). You'll climb an increasingly steep, though not technical, trail until you find yourself at a picnic bench at the top. Be sure to bring sunscreen, water, and bug spray, as some portions provide very little cover and insects can be quite active. Do not hike past the sheltered picnic area; terrain is extremely unstable beyond this point and venturing further has proved fatal for some visitors. Using our custom trip planner, Kapaa attractions like Sleeping Giant Trail can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • It's an easy going hike, where the only difficulty was the heat (mid November, 85 degrees!). From the ocean side the ascent is gentler, it took us an hour to the picnic spot, and another few mins to t...  more »
