Union Station, Kansas City

4.5
Visit a science museum and catch a train, all in one building at the lovingly restored Union Station. The station was heavily used when it was built in 1914, but fell into disrepair after World Word II until it was closed in 1985. After almost 20 years of neglect, the station reopened in 1999, after significant renovation. Now the station is a cultural and transportation hub, featuring museums such as Science City, a 3-D movie theater, and a large planetarium. Union Station is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Kansas City Edition.

  • We walked around a little while they were having an event so parts were roped off. They were just starting to decorate for the holidays.  more »

  • This place is so rich in history. I came up for a concert, and ended up having wonderful KC natives as unofficial tour guides in our family. They told us we simply had to see this gem. We learned about Nash, the FBI officer shooting, and the history of the Union Station as an official hub for transportation. I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in science (they have an exhibit called Science City), architecture, or history to stop by. If my photos don't say you to visit this gorgeous place I don't know what will.
  • One of the coolest, most authentically, historically KC places in all of Kansas City. There's ALWAYS something great to do - Science City, rotating exhibits on history or culture, a planetarium, a movie theater, a giant exhibition hall with events year round, and a few of the nicer restaurants in town. Go for a morning, afternoon, evening, or a whole day of fun! (Also one of the best views of the KC skyline is next door at the WWI museum)
  • I love the self-guided historical tour. The restoration is breathtaking. The planetarium is huge and the show is beautiful. There is a phone app that enhances the tour so you can see historical events happen. It is a top rate attraction.
  • We visited Union Station for the Mummies exhibit and this place was amazing. The parking was easy, except for where you put the money in. Slots for bills was a pain, but not too bad. There was a miniature train area and my kids loved seeing them. The exhibit was easy enough to find as well.
  • It's still a train station with a lot of attractions.... Science City, model railroad exhibit, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony during Christmas, the maker's faire exhibit and car show to showcase engineering and building complex and intricate pieces of machinery and crafts...... This is the historic site of the Kansas City massacre where the mobster, Frank Nash was murdered as he was being transported to Leavenworth federal prison. Ghost adventures filmed here a couple years ago... Even though they didn't find anything of the paranormal persuasion, more than a few employees and patrons alike, still believe it to be haunted. The multi million dollar renovations done to this historic building make it more than worth a trip to see it. Parking is decently cheap for a couple hours and it's next door to the national archives museum and caddy corner across the street from the famous crown center and all of it's eating and shopping establishments!
