Union Station, Kansas City

Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.4/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web
Visit a science museum and catch a train, all in one building at the lovingly restored Union Station. The station was heavily used when it was built in 1914, but fell into disrepair after World Word II until it was closed in 1985. After almost 20 years of neglect, the station reopened in 1999, after significant renovation. Now the station is a cultural and transportation hub, featuring museums such as Science City, a 3-D movie theater, and a large planetarium. • I have visited the union station many many times as a child with my parents. We spent Christmas eve at union station, we caught the train to California, we caught the train Denver Colorado, my husband and I caught the train to Sun Valley Idaho. My parents and I waited for my brother to return from his tour during World War II watching the many soldiers coming and going. I was so happy when they chose to bring Union Station back to life. The first time we visited after the reconstruction, my husband and I were so amazed that the sound of Union Station was back. There is nothing like it. Among all of the sights I found pictures of my father on one of his many visits to Union Station on the wall. I love this place.
  • This beautifully restored, magnificent old railway terminus is a must-see in downtown KC. You'll be amazed at how lovingly restored this 100+ year old structure is, and how beautiful it is inside. There are two restaurants, a cafĂ© and a few stores, plus a can't-miss model train layout display. You could spend two hours here easily, and it would be worth it. Highly recommended for the architecture, the atmosphere and the entertainment value.
  • Management apparently has no ability to schedule maintenance work during off hours, this means new parking lot BEYOND STUPID as every contractor and bus is parked in the loop, taking up USPS parking spaces with orange cones, and makes getting thru the loop an ordeal. Don't bother trying to use the Post Office, no spaces available cause the tourists always park there. Priority of public space might be transfer and flow, new parking with only one entry creates one long bottle neck. Again, not impressed. As a destination, use the tram. As a functioning building, not much.
  • Just an absolutely beautiful structure, it is like take a walk by in time. So much to see and do. A safe secure place to have a wonderful night out. We took the street car from the river market and had a fantastic, relaxing night out.
  • I took a tour before they remolded I have been back many times as an adult and everytime I go I'm Amazed and how beautiful it is. They have cute shops. The the best one is the science City gift shop. They also have a awesome kc themed gift vending maching right by there that has awesome kc items.
