Kansas City Hall, Kansas City
(4.2/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
The City Hall of Kansas City, Missouri is the official seat of government for the city of Kansas City, Missouri. It is a 29-story skyscraper located in downtown Kansas City, and has an observation deck on the top of it. It is the fourth-tallest city hall in the world, and the seventh-tallest building in Kansas City. The building was built in 1937, under the influence of Tom Pendergast (who owned a concrete company that built the city hall), the "political boss" of Kansas City at the time. It was built to "counter" the effects of the great depression on Kansas City, and was part of a series of other government buildings, which include the Jackson County Courthouse. Both buildings were designed by Wight and Wight. The mayor's office is on the 29th floor and the City Council chamber is on the 26th floor. The city hall is considered a "Beaux-Arts" style building, but has Art Deco elements on the interior. The interior of the city hall is full of Italian gray, red, white, and green marble which lines the halls and the floors of the building. It was dedicated on October 25, 1937, and required 20000cuft of concrete, 7,800 tons of stone, 6,800 tons of steel and, as one newspaper put it, "a lake of paint" to build. One Kansas City Place, the tallest building in Kansas City and the state of Missouri was built based as a tribute to the architectural style of City Hall.

  • Parking is metered and somewhat limited. The building entrances are guarded and you will pass through a metal detector. In and of itself, it is a magnificent building.
  • America's massive building with art deco elements in the decoration of the façade. Opposite is the (rather similar in style) Jackson Countu Courthouse and upstairs hall (by the way, the fourth highest in the world) has a panoramic terrace with views of the city.

  • Come and walk the 30 or so floors. Great lunch event. The is the heart of Kansas City, MO. If you are downtown stop in to see the wonderful architecture.

  • Take the opportunity to go to the observation deck. Spectacular views of the city.
  • My wife and I stopped by the City Hall building and were able to visit the observation platform. The view was every bit as good as that seen from the Liberty Memorial, maybe better. Looking north we could see the downtown airport and looking west we could see Kansas City, Kansas. The first time we tried to visit, it was closed due to ice. Art deco is everywhere: doors, windows, even mail slots.
  • I work in downtown Kansas City and I went to City Hall on my lunch break because I heard about the Observation Deck and thought that would be a good spot to take a few photos of the city from. After getting to the 28th floor there was a sign that said you actually have to go to the lower level security to be let up to the observation deck, "I thought, this would've been great to know before hand but oh well my mistake." I get to the lower security desk to ask about getting to view the Observation Deck only to be told maintenance is going on and to try back on Monday as it should be finished then. I call on that following Friday there' maintenance still going which is odd because I go by the building during day time hours and there is no sign of any work being done. I call 3 more Fridays and still maintenance which is very odd and I get the feeling the security guard lady is just being plain lazy which is very disconcerting when you consider my tax dollars are paying for her to be lazy and not do her job. I am now resorting to writing the poor reviews and trying to find outlets for letting them know my disgust. Update: I finally got to go up and see the views and they were fantastic I'll change my rating but leave 1 possible star off because of having to go through the hassle.
  • Can we please change this on Google maps from "Kansas City Hall" to "Kansas City, City Hall". Please and thank you.
  • Great site, easy to use search features. Found my hotel at a great price. Would recommend to anyone.
