Nature / Park
The Parks Foundation of Kalamazoo County was responsible for leading the fundraising drive that allowed the west side of Markin Glen to open as a County Park in 1994 after the County acquired the property from the City of Kalamazoo. The Foundation then raised over $5M to construct the east side of the park.

Markin Glen features unique and beautiful natural features. From the top of one of the highest points in Kalamazoo, hikers can experience a scenic view of downtown. The park is also home to a wide variety of spring flowers and has a mature beech maple forest. The state-of-the-art campground was opened in 2004 and offers 38 sites conveniently located just north of downtown Kalamazoo.

Other park activities include a swimming beach, fishing lake, paved multi-use trail, picnic shelters, tennis courts, and hiking.

  • Beautiful beach with plenty of areas to walk and enjoy the scenery. But keep in mind this camp ground is centered much more around RV's/Campers than tents. Each camp site has a giant cement slab right in the middle meant for an RV/Camper. We managed to pitch out tent in the small patch of grass off to the side.
  • Love camping here. Great sites with lots of space. Quiet for the most part and near some excellent trails.
  • We love to walk around this park. The beach area is nice, but we usually walk over to the island and then around the park to enjoy the weather/scenery. Campground is a little sparce; mostly slabs in a set area. However it seems like a great place for the family to get away.
  • This is a pretty decent park and nice place to take the kids. It has walking trails, playground, stocked fishing pond with dock to fish from, camp ground, and maintained sand swimming beach. There are also open areas for the kids to run and play, and pavilions that can be rented for parties and gatherings. Anywhere that people can gather easily you'll find people you don't want the kids around, but since this is a pay entry park, it helps keep troublemakers to a minimum. Usually patrons are pretty nice and well behaved.
  • A jewel of the County Park system. While small and not well known the facilities are well maintined. There are many things to do including swimming in summer at the beach.
