Markin Glen County Park, Kalamazoo

#11 of 15 in Things to do in Kalamazoo
The Parks Foundation of Kalamazoo County was responsible for leading the fundraising drive that allowed the west side of Markin Glen to open as a County Park in 1994 after the County acquired the property from the City of Kalamazoo. The Foundation then raised over $5M to construct the east side of the park.

Markin Glen features unique and beautiful natural features. From the top of one of the highest points in Kalamazoo, hikers can experience a scenic view of downtown. The park is also home to a wide variety of spring flowers and has a mature beech maple forest. The state-of-the-art campground was opened in 2004 and offers 38 sites conveniently located just north of downtown Kalamazoo.

Other park activities include a swimming beach, fishing lake, paved multi-use trail, picnic shelters, tennis courts, and hiking.

  • The park is divided into two by Douglas Ave. There are hiking and biking trails on the west side. The east side has a campground, a lake with swimming, tennis courts, and both side have picnic areas.  more »
  • Even walking in this place are exciting. We prefered this places to go picnic with friends. In summer and fall very interesting nature.  more »
  • I found this place last year when visiting my daughter. Reserved in within two weeks of arrival. My wife and I drove our 31 foot long RV from North Carolina and was pleasantly surprised upon arrival. ...  more »

  • We've been coming to this park for years. The staff is wonderful. The campground is clean and it's in a beautiful setting. Why only 4 stars, you might ask? Well, this actually has nothing to do with the park. The park is next to railroad tracks where diesel trains sit for hours on end running their engines. This morning, it ran for 5 hours. Otherwise, this is the only campground near Kalamazoo that has room for big rigs and it's the best!
  • Lake Michigan sand would save this beach. Currently dirt. Clean water and nice setting. We enjoy our time here. Bugs a menace but changing room always clean. Fish pleasantly tame and snorkeling here a dream of Michigan wildlife. If a couple shipments if sand could arrive, I'd help raise the money or go haul and shovel it.
  • NICE little County park! Full hookups for RVs and comfortable for tenters as well. Connects to miles of trails, nice swimming beach, tennis, horseshoes, volleyball... Pavilions for parties. Only negative is, the longest permitted stay is two weeks, then you have to leave for 48 hours before you can return for up to two weeks.
  • Great camping option cheap and clean. Great times. Just remember the exit gate is always unlocked for you to leave. Just please keep it closed.
  • Always a great experience. Super nice clean campground. The only drawback is the train tracks running behind the campground. Trains frequently come through at night and park there with the engine's idling all night long.
