Where to stay in Joshua Tree National Park

If you want to spend the night in Joshua Tree National Park, grab a tent and head for one of the numerous campgrounds scattered throughout the park. Some campgrounds feature a reservation system while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. A couple also provide potable water, but most do not. To sleep on a mattress and pillow with a roof over your head, stay in one of the towns surrounding the park. The towns of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms offer a number of inns and motels in a tranquil desert setting. West of the park, the options expand into the resort area of Palm Springs. Here you'll find everything from high-end spas and resorts to chain hotels, small inns, and bed and breakfasts. The park is situated about two hours from Los Angeles (if there's no traffic), making a day trip from the city another possibility.

  • We were here on a lovely, clear day in May and we could see all that was laid out before us--Palm Springs (where we were staying), the Salton Sea, the fault line. I have read that you can see mountain...  more »

  • Keys view is a nice view and the drive there is actually a nice break from the heat when it is really hot. Only real issue is the couple of times we went the haze/smog made it hard to see very far.  more »

  • Wonderful views! Short and easy, paved walk appropriate for young kids, or folks that don't get around as easily. Clearer whether makes this stop more worth the drive up. Watch out for bees near the restrooms (or any water), though.
  • On a clear day, there should be a very nice view from here. If you come as the sun is setting, the view gets even better. Make sure to bring a light jacket as it can get pretty windy. I came around 5 PM and there were several parking spots open. I would imagine that during the day, parking can be hard to find.
  • Awesome place. Spectacular views. Great for sunset and sunrise. I think this is the highlight of the park.
  • Easily accessible by car, this place offers a great over the Joshua Tree valley. Expect over 30 people at sunset. Toilets available.
  • Visiting Joshua Tree National Park and looking for a good place to watch the sunset? Keys View is that place. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the projected sunset time (which you can find at the Oasis Visitor Center) to watch the progession of the sunset. My husband, son and I happened to be there on a day with clouds, it was amazing. There are several vantage points from which you can watch and take photos, there's even a Joshua Tree which adds another dimension to your photo.
