Pedernales Falls State Park is a state park in central Texas in the United States.LocationPedernales Falls State Park is located east of Johnson City. The park is on the Pedernales River, southwest of the river's mouth at Lake Travis.HistoryBefore 1970, the area that is now Pedernales Falls State Park was a working ranch, known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas purchased the land for the park in 1970, and the park opened in 1971.RecreationMany of the activities in Pedernales Falls State Park center around the Pedernales River: swimming, tubing, wading and fishing. The park also has a number of picnic areas and campsites, including some primitive campsites that require a hike of two miles or more to reach. There are also of hiking and mountain biking trails, 10 miles of equestrian trails, and 14 miles of backpacking trails.Like many rivers in central Texas, the Pedernales is prone to variable water levels. A sign at the park shows a relatively tranquil river in one picture and a raging wall of muddy water in the next picture, said to be taken only five minutes after the first. The speed at which flash floods can arise along this river has resulted in several deaths at the park.

  • We have been meaning to make it out to this park for a long time and we finally made it. I can see why this park is always so full and busy. We got there early and asked where we should go and the park ranger told us that they close the falls proper early as they are so popular and they fill up. We headed there and greatly enjoyed crawling all over the rocks and seeing the beautiful falls. We also appreciated that the dogs were welcome on all the trails at the park.
  • Nice park, good hiking trails but not really long. I love that you can bring pets, perfect to spend a day or camp. Recommend going early in the summer in case they close due to high traffic.
  • This is one of the best hiking spots ever and one not to be missed if you are considering a visit. You can't swim in this area but there is a swim hole close by to take a swim. Only 45 minutes from San Antonio and also 45 minutes from Austin. Such a beautiful place.
  • I normally love this park. Unfortunately, it seems the State police have taken to openly patrolling the park. At one point an officer was apparently watching our campsite in the dark, without announcing his presence, during which time a female friend had changed clothing. His approach toward us was unnervingly from the direction in which she had been changing. Again the park and its staff have been great, but there are armed creepers in those woods- protect yourselves.
  • Beautiful falls, but very busy in the summer. Get there early if you plan to swim. Park fills up fast. Be mindful if you have small children or lots of gear, the swimming area is about 1/4 mile from parking lot and it has a large amount of stairs.
