Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a 1086acre North Carolina state park in Ashe County, North Carolina in the United States. Located near Jefferson, North Carolina, it includes the peak of Mount Jefferson, named for Thomas Jefferson, who owned land nearby.HistoryIn 1939 the Works Progress Administration created a road enabling widespread access to Mount Jefferson. Local citizens donated land and money in efforts to attain state park status for the local park, which required the park to have a minimum of 400acre. By 1956, their efforts yielded a 300acre donation and raised enough funds to buy an additional 164acre for the park. As a result, Mount Jefferson became a state park in October 1956.Tourist informationThe park has one main road that leads to the peak of Mount Jefferson. On the way up are two overlooks followed by hiking trails and a picnic shelter at the top. The mountain rises to more than 1600ft above the surrounding landscape and provides a bird's-eye view of both Jefferson and West Jefferson. Park hours are limited by inclement weather, but otherwise open every day during the year with the exception of Christmas Day.

  • Very nice State Park. Easy drive to the summit with a couple of overlooks along the way. The trail at the top is easy to navigate but keep the kids away from the edge of the cliffs in a couple areas. ...  more »
  • Incredible, unbeatable! The autumnal landscape can move to those who do not love the nature. Beautiful view. Low level of difficulty. Fresh air. A roast may be done. Very clean bathrooms

  • The view was amazing! We went on a clear day and could see for miles. It was peaceful and breathtaking. The hike was not as bad I as thought it would be.

  • Don't expect much from the top of the service road besides seeing a cell phone tower and a weather tower. Take the extra hike to Luther Rock and it will be worth it. Excellent overall. An easy hike for the view.
  • We stopped here on the way through to Virginia. The views were amazing. We didn't hike very much but hope to return one day to hit the trails. Stopping at the overlooks to take in the view is a must.
  • Love it absolutely love the trails and hicking with my family. GREAT VIEWS GOOD EXCERSISE
  • The park is beautiful and the overlooks are easy to get to. The views have great views of Jefferson and West Jefferson.
  • This state park has a small picnic area and a few trails to hike. It's not huge, but the scenery is unbeatable. The trails are marked as moderate and strenuous, but they really weren't more than moderate.
