  • We were looking for something unique to do for Halloween, so we booked a tour here. $25/person wasn't bad at all for a 2-hour ghost tour. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. We were in huge group...  more »
  • If you have not been on this tour, you are missing out! It is one of the neatest tour's I have ever been on with lots of different area's of the prison to see. Lot's of good stories about what happene...  more »

  • I attended the 2 hour informational tour in October. After hearing about the tour, I expected it to be light-hearted and joked about "going to jail" with the people I was going with. The tour was very sobering- the tour guides are retired prison guards who worked in the old penitentiary and have many first hand experiences they are willing to share. The tour of the cell blocks, yard, dungeon, and the gas chamber give a very realistic glimpse into what prison was/is really like. There is a small museum across the street that has information, pictures, and items from when the penitentiary was open. If you are considering going, I'd recommend going sooner rather than later. They have already torn down cell blocks and there is talk of tearing down more sections of this historical treasure. The price of admission was well worth it.
  • This was a very fun tour! Our tour guide Bill (although very friendly and enthusiastic) talked about 45 minutes of it, while many of the tour takers were anxious to SEE what he was talking about rather than hear about it. I feel a few people (including ourselves) were cut short taking pictures and walking around that we otherwise would have gotten to do had he not used so much of the 2 hour tour talking. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have an enthusiastic tour guide then a boring one, but people don't travel to Jefferson City and pay for a tour to be sat in a room or stand in an old prison courtyard for half of it listening to "how neat the prison and history is"...we want to SEE IT! I already read about how cool it was online...that's why we paid to tour it! Anyway, the second half of the tour was amazing when we finally got set free (no pun intended) to explore it a little more and take the pictures we wanted.
  • One of the Coolest Tours I've been on! ❤ But then again CJ is right up my ally! The History I found to be absolutely fascinating and incredible! Having the previous Warden as your Guide made it so much more "Personal"! Listening to HIS experiences of running, What at One Point the LARGEST Maximum Security Prison in the United States.... I could have Stayed and visited with him for HOURS! AS for the Overnight Ghost/Haunting Tour.... 😓 Our Son is only 14. And minimal age must be 18 and older. We'll be back! ❤
  • Simply awesome. My wife and I went on the 2 hour tour this past weekend and my only complaint is that I wish I would have signed up for a longer tour. The amount of history in the Penitentiary was tremendous. I could have stayed there for a few more hours and listened to the tour guide if they would have let me. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and really took pride in his work. He was more than willing to answer any and all questions, plus provide numerous stories of various events (good and bad) that occurred at the Penitentiary. I definitely recommend this place. Totally worth every penny.
  • Me and my Best Friend did the Tour yesterday. Our Tour guide was wonderful. Very knowledgeable . We learned a lot about the History of the Prison. We Loved how you were able to go off on your own in a few of the buildings and look and touch and get pictures of whatever you wanted to. Going into the cells was very cool. being able to sit in the execution chairs was also very cool. Great experience! Highly recommended.
