Rocks State Park is a public recreation area located in and around Deer Creek Valley near Pylesville, Harford County, Maryland. The state park's preserve the geologic formation known as the King and Queen's Seat and other features in three non-contiguous areas near the junction of Maryland Route 24 and Maryland Route 165. It is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.HistoryThe belief that the King and Queen's Seat rock formation was used by Native Americans for ceremonial purposes stems from a book published in 1880 by Thomas Wysong entitled The Rocks of Deer Creek: Their Legends and History. Wysong's account was written for "the young people especially,... mingling fact and fancy." An archaeological investigation by the Maryland State Highway Administration begun in 2005 failed to find evidence that the site had significance to modern Indians as a “traditional cultural property.” The “Rocks of Deer Creek” were already a tourist attraction in the 19th century, served by the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad at milepost 35.3 until 1958. The state purchased 82 acres at the site in 1948, opening it under the name Deer Creek State Park in 1952.Park areasMain: The park has three noncontiguous sections in Deer Creek Valley. The largest section, home to park headquarters, is located along Rocks Ridge and is home to the King and Queen's Seat rock formation, a 190ft rock outcropping that towers above the banks of Deer Creek. Falling Branch: The Falling Branch area is a 67acres tract of land located north of the Rock Ridge section, along the Falling Branch tributary of Deer Creek. It is home to Kilgore Falls, the second highest waterfall in Maryland.Hidden Valley: The Hidden Valley section, located to the west of the Falling Branch area, is an undeveloped area along the banks of Deer Creek primarily used for fishing.Add Rocks State Park and other attractions to your Jarrettsville trip itinerary using our Jarrettsville online attractions planner .

Rocks State Park Reviews

This place is beautiful. Waterfalls and small bridges. I took my 11 and 14 year old girls for a very relaxing and peaceful walk in the trails. We climbed and took turns holding he baby. Great for all ages. Definitely a great place for nature pictures. We will be going back with a picnic lunch. Parking was great. Don’t bring a stroller if you have a baby, bring a chest/back carrier.
Short hike to the waterfall and it's beautiful. Definitely go when it's not crowded for optimal viewing. The water is also very clear. Very nice park.
The highlight of the park is the King and Queens seat. It is a rock outcropping with a spectacular view. It is a short walk from the parking lot for the Rock Ridge State Park picnic area off St. Clair Bridge Rd. There is another small parking lot on Rocks Road along Deer Creek. You have to hike up the hill from here but it is a nice hike. There are also a variety of trails that are really beautiful.
I have been visiting Rocks State Park since I was a little girl. I've been fishing, tubing and hiking for decades. This park is a favorite of mine during all seasons. We have had family picnics there and love the hike up to the King & Queen seat. From up there the view is spectacular, especially in the fall when the leaves are colorful! They have a wonderful playground and I've had my grandchildren there many times.
A great state park to hang out at! There is a lot to do. You can go to the waterfall or just swim in the river. Hiking trails are very abundant and take you to some awesome views like the King and Queens seat. If that's not your style you can always hang out and grill at one of the picnic areas.
