Friendship Fountain is a large fountain in Jacksonville, Florida. It is in St. Johns River Park (also known as Friendship Fountain Park) at the west end of Downtown Jacksonville's Southbank Riverwalk attraction. The world's largest and tallest fountain when it opened, it has been one of Jacksonville's most recognizable and popular attractions. The fountain and park were designed by Jacksonville architect Taylor Hardwick in 1963 and opened in 1965. The fountain's three pumps could push 17,000USgal of water per minute up to 100feet in height. Friendship Fountain remained one of Jacksonville's signature attractions through the 20th century, but severe corrosion and deterioration to the equipment resulted in periodic closures in the 2000s. In 2011 the city completed a $3.2 million renovation to the fountain and the surrounding park.HistoryThe fountain and Friendship Park was designed by Taylor Hardwick, the Jacksonville architect who also designed the Haydon Burns Library. An area of 14acre of land were donated for the project by the Southside Business Men's Club, an organization dedicated to the improvement of the Southside that was established in 1932. Begun in 1963 and completed at a cost of $1.7 million, the park opened in March 1965. The "world’s largest and tallest" fountain at the time, it became a popular tourist attraction. The three pumps had a combined and could push 17,000USgal per minute; some streams as tall as a 10-story building. The enclosure for the pumps and controls was so large that the architect had to include it as an element of design.

  • Wow! A spectacular fountain and skyline view! I even got to see the bridge rise and fall and the Christmas tree across the river dressed in bright lights. While I was left red nosed and frosty, the walk and sights were lovely. I would love to visit again in the daytime. Lots of benches and seating, great for a picnic.
  • Lovely place. Nice fountain. Riverwalk is amazing at dawn. Fountain is nice at night. You can even get dinner and a drink at River City on the west end.
  • It was a beautiful place to be at for a stop in the area. The fountain and the architecture is magnificent, and the area has a nice family feel and everyone felt welcomed to be there (there was a little kid's party, an unrelated person's photoshoot, and a peaceful protest happening all at once, and all three parties respected the others space).
  • Not to be missed at night with its lights on and admire how it highlights the downtown area in the background. Nice grounds for walking or just sitting down and admiring a sunset. Dedicated in 1965, it is one of the largest self-contained fountains built, pumping up to 6,500 gallons of water per minute to a height of 100 feet, with 265 lights molding the water into a sparkling mist.
  • There are many good things I could say about this place. It is in close proximity to many other things that are very family-friendly. If you have children that are interested in marine life the Riverwalk is a great place and you have easy access to take a nice walk over the Main Street Bridge. It's a great place for small and quick weddings or ceremonies of the type.
