Located in the state Capital of Jackson, the Mississippi Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the state and has been a community-supported institution for more than 100 years. The Museum boasts an impressive permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art, in addition to hosting world-class traveling exhibitions. The Mississippi Story, a free ongoing exhibition comprised of more than 200 objects from the Museum’s permanent collection, offers Mississippians and visitors alike the opportunity to explore the remarkable history of visual arts in the Magnolia State. In addition to fulfilling its mission of “engaging Mississippians in the visual arts,” the Museum also offers unique dining and shopping experiences at The Palette Café by Viking and in The Museum Store.

The Art Garden at the Mississippi Museum of Art, a 1.2 acre public green space, breaks down barriers between the neighboring arts organizations and serves as the nexus of a cultural district that empowers creativity, expression, and synergy in the arts community. The Art Garden features a welcoming lawn, seasonal foliage, native garden beds, permanent art installations, soothing fountains, and outdoor terrace dining. This versatile, open, outdoor space is open to the public from 10AM – 5PM daily. In 2010, the Museum received the National Medal for Museum Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency.

The Palette Café by Viking is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Lunch served 11 am - 2 pm.

  • My main focus was on the collection of local artists. There are painting and photos and some of them I found very good and inspiring.
  • The MS Museum of Art has some great exhibits and they are good to feature different genres from time to time, which changes things up a bit.
  • There is so much to do here. There is something for every age, toddler up to teen. Create art, experiment with science, live life underground like a groundhog, pretend to be a car mechanic, a builder ...  read more »
  • I think this is the best place in Jackson to do something. Excellent arts !
  • I loved the fact that it was free, photos are allowed, and all the artwork is from Mississippi artists. I showed up about 40 minutes before close and no one tried to rush me out or follow me around like at other art places I have been. This is a neat little place to visit when in Jackson.
  • Had a really nice time when I stop threw and I got to snap a few really good photos
  • Kids programs are fabulous. Third Thursday programs are lovely.
  • I remember coming here while I was very young for The Palace Exhibit despite what any New Yorker's opinion of our state or art this place is 5 star. Very education and the tour and staff were very professional.
