The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is a museum in Jackson, Mississippi. Its mission is to document, exhibit the history of, and educate the public about the American Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. state of Mississippi between 1945 and 1970. The museum secured $20 million in funding from the Mississippi Legislature in April 2011 after Governor Haley Barbour testified in favor of its funding. Ground was broken in 2013, and the museum opened on December 9, 2017. The museum is administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

According to Mississippi state senator John Horhn, it is the first state-sponsored civil rights museum in the United States.

  • Awesome museum! Well laid out with lots of excellent displays, visual and auditory. Plan to spend several hours here! Really tells the story of the blacks in the south.

  • Amazing museum! The detail and information is incredible. It is very interactive, and there are so many artifacts to look at. There are great films and sound effects. If you want to go through and really take in all the information, you could spend several hours here. Some of it is graphic (out of necessity) but they have lots of signs warning ahead of time. It was $15 for both this and the Mississippi museum, and I found it well worth the price. Also have a great gift shop with lots of local pottery. You can get national park passport stamps at the front desk.
  • In town for a short visit and was happy to find out Sunday is free day. This is definitely a powerful moving museum. I highly recommend it to everyone. It shows how far we have come but it also shows how far we have to go especially now since 45 really brought out the worst in a lot of people.
  • This museum is absolutely amazing! It's divided into two parts. One part is Mississippi history and the other part is civil rights history in Mississippi. You need at minimum of 3 hours just to soak in all the exhibits. We learned so much from this experience! I highly recommend during your time in Jackson, Mississippi.
  • As a born & raised Mississippian, I was truly submerged into the history of Mississippi with facts that are less known and less shared. The museum did a fantastic job of sharing true Mississippi history while sharing the view points of the different groups of people involved in the history of the state. My friend and I went on Sunday, which happened to be the free day of the museum. I also enjoyed a light snack at the cafe. They had terrific customer service! The young lady even asked us if we needed anything else before it closed. Next time I will tour the civil rights museum!
  • I knew some, but did not realize how much Civil Rights history took place in Mississippi. This museum is one of the better designed and interactive civil rights museums I've visited. I only spent an hour this time but I really needed an entire day to explore the whole museum and soak in all the information. There is a cafe on site, so you can take a break, eat, then explore some more. I can't wait to go back.
