Kennedy Tailing Wheels Park, Jackson

4.4
#11 of 32 in Things to do in Amador County
Historic Site Tourist Spot
The Kennedy Wheels, protected by corrugated steel sheds, operated with few interruptions 24-hours a day, from 1914 until the U.S. Government closed the mine in 1942. Soon after, when the price of scrap metal soared, the wheels sheds were dismantled revealing the wheels to the world and the elements for the first time in 28 years.

They soon became a Mother Lode mining tourist attraction and were probably the most photographed relic of the quartz mining era in California. They also became part of the (City of) Jackson Wheels Park.

  • Interesting stop on our recent road trip. Huge old wooden wheels give a glimpse into the mining past of this scenic area. Well worth checking out if in the area.  more »
  • It is a small park but there is gold rush history there with the HUGE water wheel. I enjoy history and how things were built back then. They have one wheel laying on the ground and they rebuilt anothe...  more »
  • The drive in was as interesting as the tailing park! Some of the buildings date back from the gold rush times. This was a new part of town for us. One building had the big metal doors from long ago! T...  more »

  • When we first moved here this was little more than a bathroom with a few historically important features that were dilapidated and falling down. Within the last year or so the park restoration project has really done a great job of restoring and beautifying it. New asphalt, proper care of the actual wheels and future protection of them. A dog park, and a beautiful Vista area with handicap access is amazing. Seating for a outdoor lunch. All the displays properly labeled and instructive. My kids and I thoroughly enjoyed the new layout.
  • Nice park. Interesting history. Pet friendly park with off leash dog park.
  • Great historical spot related to the California gold rush.
  • Nice view, very quiet place
  • Just saw it today . Well done . Live in the county never been there . Dog park right next to it also very nice . Didn't know we had a dog park .
