  • Free tour! Worth the time and effort to learn about the most important group of telescopes in the world! There is nothing up at the actual telescope to learn about as there is no access there; this is...  more »
  • Very informative talk about the observatory. Highly recommend a visit before going to the summit at Mauna Kea. You will have a much better understanding of what you will see at the summit.  more »
  • If you have gone or are planning to go to Mauna Kea and you are in or passing through Waimea, stop at the visitor center of the W M Keck Observatory. It will enhance your visit to Mauna Kea. This loca...  more »

  • Carmen: I am using a speculative vision to think about ways of conserving information and digital data such as images, sounds, color and text. Data preservation will become a problem in the future due to old technology, crashes or nature. That’s why it is important to already start thinking about how this could happen, and how to react to the situation. Or how to prevent such a big data loss. By taking aspects of the plastic soup which is formed by overusing this material, I am creating an alternative way of using the plastics to preserve data. By asking all these ‘what if’ questions, I want people to start thinking about what kind of future they want (and do not want). This can help the speculative designer, to increase the odds of achieving desirable futures. The play with scale is also an important aspect. By scaling down the idea of the plastic soup it’s easier to get a grip on the subject, I take small parts of this big subject and process them in the visuals. Blowing up the microplastics lead to creating awareness and the transfer of information. So, the role of (micro)plastic acts as the container of a message, making water the carrier in this process.
  • Someone find out which telescope visitors can visit and look through the scope. The drive up to the top does not require a 4x4 but recommended. Use Low gear for better traction. Viewing areas amazing. A short 30 minute walk to the Crater lake will take your breath away physical ly speaking.
  • Amazing place for Astronomy buffs. High enough to feel dizzy from lack of oxygen. The Keck telescope visitor center is a must see place if you like to explore.
  • Incredible experience. Visitor's gallery closes at 4pm.
  • Amazing place to watch the sun set.
