Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park, Island of Hawaii

Categories: Beaches, Nature & Parks, Outdoor Activities
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web
The attraction at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park is not beach itself but what it's made of--jet black sand formed from nearby volcanic activity. Framed by coconut palms, the beach provides a place for picnicking with restrooms provided. Watch for green sea turtles swimming near the rocks, however, you may want to refrain from swimming here--it is not recommended because of the cold water and rocky shores. The area is also known for strong currents. To visit Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park on your trip to Pahala, use our Pahala vacation planner.

  • Gorgeous black sand beach with multiple sea turtles getting on & off of the beach. Life guards (and dog!) were very nice and friendly.
  • The Black Sand Beach was really cool to see. They have a decent size parking lot and there seemed to be a steady flow of tourists.
