  • Great area with unique maroon color soil from the Iron. Great historic sight, good fishing, fun adventuring around the roads, and my favorite, the scuba diving! If you are interested, Brainerd's MN School of Diving has classes that come here. Great water clarity. Roads can have massive puddles if it rains, so trucks or 4 wheel drive is best if you are going deep into the pits.
  • Awesome time riding these beautiful trails. The scenery is not to be missed, the trails are well groomed, well marked, and the people are friendly. We brought our 6 and 8 year old, and they could keep up without too much trouble. We will definitely be coming here as often as we can.
  • Beautiful lake, good mountain biking trails. Not very beginner's friendly as the green trail rides next to a drop off to the lake. Duluth is better.
  • 15 years ago, the whole area was an absolute dump. Then, things got cleaned up and it was wonderful. Now, things are reverting back to a disgusting mess, if you get away from the bike trails. Campers at the water access points, that stay all summer and don't allow you rightful access, are leaving the sites in terrible condition. People using areas as garbage dumps, the list goes on. It seems once the bike trails were put in, the DNR ignored those who use the rest of the recreation area. I'll add pictures next time I'm out there, which is often.
  • Overly restrictive rules for winter use (especially considering these are public trails administered by the state DNR): they require a 'fat-bike' with a minimum tire width. Good family-friendly mountain bike trail system in the summer. Camping area is not aesthetically remarkable....leaves something to be desired.
