#6 of 14 in Nature in Marin County
Tomales Bay State Park is a California state park in Marin County, California. It consists of approximately 2,000 acres (8 km²) divided between two areas, one on the west side of Tomales Bay and the other on the east side. The main area, on the west, is part of the Point Reyes peninsula, and adjacent to Point Reyes National Seashore, which is operated by the U.S. National Park Service. The park is approximately 40 miles (64 km) north of San Francisco.HistoryThe area was the habitat of the Coast Miwok people for several thousand years before the arrival of Europeans. British explorer Sir Francis Drake landed in the area in 1579. About 25 years later, Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno landed in the area and named it "La Punta de Los Tres Reyes" ("Point of the Three Kings"), a reference to the Feast of the Three Kings. The name was later anglicized to Point Reyes. Most of Point Reyes remained undeveloped because of its remote location; the main part of the peninsula hosts a number of agricultural uses, particularly dairy operations. Some of the beach areas on Tomales Bay began to be purchased by private parties, and in order to secure public access to the Bay, conservation groups and the state of California also purchased property, and the state park was opened on November 8, 1952. When most of the rest of Point Reyes was incorporated into Point Reyes National Seashore, Tomales Bay State Park remained in the state park system.

  • What a wonderful experience! Went kayaking with friends along the shore and loved every minute of it. A must see on your list!  more »
  • We hiked out to the point on a weekend and had the trail mostly to ourselves. Get on the trail by 8am if you want to see elk. Many people were just starting out at 10 or 11am and asking if we saw elk ...  more »

  • Beautiful area with lots to see and do, but be careful and take precautions if you visit here: it's a known tick hot bed, and they even have a sign telling you as much when you first leave the parking lot to hike down to Hearts Desire beach. If you visit here, please spray yourself with DEET and Permethrin dip your clothes. You don't want to get bitten by a tick.
  • Pierce Point is one of my favorite locations for wildlife photography. The Tule Elk are a wonderful animal to just watch or photograph. I can spend hours just sitting on the trail viewing these magnificent animals. Just stay on the trail especially during the mating season when the large bull elk get all puffed up and are running the cow elk around,You don't want too get in between the bulls and the cows as this can be very dangerous. The Tule Elk reserve is a bit of a drive but it's well worth it.
  • Easy kayaking access from Hearts Desire beach. Only $8 entrance fee and plenty of parking on a weekday. I can imagine this place would be very busy on the weekend in mid summer.
  • This review is for Shell Beach - Great little twin beaches with sand bars and trees for shade. Dogs not allowed. Persons should remain on leash as posted. The closest street address is 255 Camino Del Mar with a parking lot and short trail to the beach.
  • Very amazing cool place for this summer
