Home to the Indianapolis 500 and the city's Grand Prix, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is also known for its dedication to automotive and motorsports history. The speedway is famous for hosting some of the world's biggest races, and therefore the world's best drivers, since it was established in 1909. With the ability to hold up to 400,000 guests, it is the highest-capacity sports arena in the world. If you're in town for a race, or are just interested in learning more about racing, be sure to stop into the Hall of Fame Museum. The museum was founded in 1956 and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Here you'll discover more than 75 cars, along with historical racing and automotive accessories and paraphernalia. • I know the track is historic, but man the museum and bus ride for $20 falls a little short. The museum feels just old and sad inside. The bus ride around the track is pretty lame except when you can g...  more »

  • There in the off-season, we went to the Museum. Course in tour match is $ 20. In the course of the real goal of bricks can kiss, as Takuma Sato at Dudley's. In the souvenir shop, with Taku's name sells bottled milk. Maybe the sale up to 4/18. It is because they sell bottles of the winner of the previous year. Milk chug out of the bath when tested, would get the chance come back is for non-will.

  • Last weekend my family visited the museum and we were fortunate enough to meet Mr. Larry Crouch. I had asked him how many races he had attended and his response was nothing short of amazing. Mr. Crouch has been involved in about every facet of racing and was nice enough to explain his life experiences in racing. I recommend that everyone should see the museum and maybe you will get to meet Mr. Crouch and you will understand what I mean. Thank you Mr. Crouch for taking the time to speak to me. You are an amazing man!
  • Such an awesome experience! I had never been out there for the lights at Christmas time but it was a unique experience and I can only hope to go back again! The staff at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is always friendly and helpful. They know how to get large crowds in and out safely. I would definitely recommend going to see the Christmas lights if you haven't before and we will definitely make this a part of our family traditions!
  • This place is huge! There was around 50,000 people when we were there and it almost felt empty. The Museum in the infield was great! There was a pipe band that came through and everything was super clean and we'll kept. The food and drinks were also really good and not over priced (for a race track).
  • One of the best sporting venues around! I went to the 500 and had a great time. I would definitely suggest coming to a race. If you do spring for the parking pass inside the track, the walk is wayyyyyy shorter! If you come early you can play a round of golf!
  • Fantastic. Huge fan for years. Stopped in only passing by on my way across country. Did not have time for a tour but was able to get a couple pictures of the track. No hassle gift shops for people looking for quick gifts on the road. Was in and out of there in less than an hour. Can't wait to come back later for actual race!

Where to stay in Indianapolis

With limited public transportation in the city, those traveling without a car should consider the location of their accommodations carefully. To stay within walking distance of Indianapolis’ best restaurants and bars, look for a hotel or apartment rental in the arty Mass Ave or Broad Ripple neighborhoods. Downtown lodgings are often more expensive, but provide easy access to Indy’s best-known attractions for those on vacation. Bed and breakfasts in the city’s residential areas provide a healthy dose of Midwestern charm.
