  • Great park fairly close to Indianapolis. Lots of well-kept hiking and walking trails, benches, playgrounds. Ornithology center is a neat place to visit, plus offers a good chance to see nesting bald eagles. Lots of birds keep the park lively. If there's a criticism, it's that the north and east trails are close to freeways. The noise disrupts the nature experience and makes it hard to truly escape. Go west and south to get further away from the bustle.
  • Great place to take your kids. They have a nature center, bird observatory, paddle boats, and much much more. The trail system is one of the best in Indiana. You can enjoy a quick walk in the woods or even an all day hike. Lots of choices with Eagle Creek.
  • A great park for mostly quiet hikes, jogging, biking, and family picnics. The shelters and playgrounds are excellent for groups small and large for outdoor get-togethers. They have great kid day-camps during the summer. There is a beach on the lake and a marine as well, but I don't have any experience with them as of yet.
  • Great trails! Trails are well marked and easy to follow. Cross country skiing and snowshoe trails available. Always fun hiking.
  • Great place for a road or trail run! The marked road runs are 5, 8, and 10K. Sime reasonable hills on all of them. Running around the reservoir is always nice.

Where to stay in Indianapolis

With limited public transportation in the city, those traveling without a car should consider the location of their accommodations carefully. To stay within walking distance of Indianapolis’ best restaurants and bars, look for a hotel or apartment rental in the arty Mass Ave or Broad Ripple neighborhoods. Downtown lodgings are often more expensive, but provide easy access to Indy’s best-known attractions for those on vacation. Bed and breakfasts in the city’s residential areas provide a healthy dose of Midwestern charm.
