I took my daughter here to try Gold Panning after having a fairly disappointing experience at Crow Creek. At Crow Creek they sent us to a stream with a lot of people and no one having any success of a...  more »

We enjoyed our visit to Indian Valley very much. A short drive from Anchorage, for $1 admission we were treated to a couple hours of fun panning for gold, hearing the history of the mine, and enjoying the turkeys and chickens. The beautiful view of the water and mountains were an added treat. The owners were so gracious. We are looking forward to staying at their B and B located at the same location. Take the whole family on this half day excursion you will be glad you did!

Great little gold panning and gift shop. The kids did not want to leave. Visited with the couple that run it for a good while as well. Great folks!

This is a great stop on your Alaska visit, especially if you want to go prospect gold by yourself and need some hands on training. The place is historic and the site of an old gold miner's cabin. The view is breathtaking. We bought a few buckets of dirt and the owner walked us through the process of using the gold pans and explaining the differences between them. I had been doing it wrong on my previous panning attempts. We found the gold and small gems in the dirt and it was a lot of fun. It is more instructional than realistic because I am pretty sure everyone finds a couple specks of gold in their pans and that's how a tourist stop should be and a bargain at $10.00. Then we went inside to the gift shop and picked up several nice items to take home. The staff was amazing and even lent me a bucket so I had a complete set of prospecting gear for my adventures the next day. They also sell gold mining equipment so you can make your own memories along the streams elsewhere.

The mom & poo owners were great. We learned a lot about gold panning. Would definitely come again.

Where to stay in Anchorage

Anchorage hotels increase room rates during the height of the tourist season, but you can visit the area economically any time of year by choosing a budget-friendly bed and breakfast or small inn. The city's downtown area contains the priciest rooms; most are offered by chain hotels. You can find less expensive rooms at a cluster of hotels located in Midtown, a largely commercial neighborhood with a good selection of restaurants and shops.
