Heritage Farm Museum and Village is an open-air living history museum in Huntington, West Virginia that focuses on Appalachian history and culture. Originally conceived as a location to house and display the private collection of A. Michael "Mike" and Henriella Perry, Heritage Farm has expanded into an entire Appalachian Frontier Village that was recently named West Virginia's first Smithsonian-affiliated museum.HistoryIn 1973, co-founders Mike and Henriella Perry decided to relocate from Huntington city proper to a farmhouse on the outskirts of town. Their interest was piqued by the old wooden logs they discovered beneath the walls of their house. Their efforts to understand the tools and techniques involved in building a cabin, coupled with their hobby of antiquing, led to the genesis of what would become Heritage Farm. Originally a private collection housed in a nearby barn, they soon began to accumulate authentic old structures and materials that they felt would convey an appreciation for everyday life in Appalachia from the 19th century to the present.Heritage Farm in its current sense began with the first "May Festival" on May 4, 1996. This event was the only day the village was open on an annual basis until 2006. It is currently a year-round public museum, open every day except Sundays and holidays.MuseumsHeritage Farm has seven main museum buildings:LodgingIn addition to museums, Heritage Farm rents buildings for visitors to lodge in. All the log cabins but one are constructed from 19th-century logs sourced from around West Virginia. Other lodgings of note include a 19th-century dairy barn reconstructed into a conference and retreat center, and an 1940s N&W Caboose with fold-out beds.

  • I absolutely loved my experience here at Heritage Farm today! I Highly recommend it to any one person or even up to whole groups can come experience what it has been like growing up and living since the 1800's. I got to go with my niece and her school today and we spent about 3 hours, which though we got to see plenty, we didn't get to see and experience it all. What we did see and get to learn and participate in, was so uplifting, reminiscing, and down right magical that they have been able to preserve time how they have. I will be going back with my son, who is 10 and my fiance. I also heard that they decorate for Christmas and have a wonderful display for all to see. Easy to find and not to far out of the town of Huntington for it to take you as far back in time as it does. Highly recommended!! Thank you Heritage Farm Staff, for your welcoming, informing, and all around wonderful service & experience you gave us all from Barboursville Elementary School's, Kindergarten classes and their chaperones!!
  • Heritage Farm is warm, personal, and thoroughly informative. The many museums--Progress, Transportation, Heritage, the Doll museum, and the Country Store--are brimming with articles and artifacts that display the ingenuity and courage of our Appalachian ancestors. I would wager that there is no better presentation of Appalachian history anywhere! Also, the food is top notch, there is plenty of stimulating entertainment for young children and teenagers (including petting zoos, a playground, wagon rides, tomahawk throwing, and more), and the workers are kind and always willing to help. I would recommend a day at Heritage Farm to everyone!
  • Such a great place to visit with your family. The kids would love the petting zoo.
  • Get time seeing the grounds. Especially fun with blacksmith.
  • This is such a great place both from a historical and educational perspective. I love watching the lumber mill and the blacksmith shop. We've stayed in a couple of the cabins and they were both excellent. I highly recommend this place for anyone any age.
