Olana State Historic Site, Hudson

Former home of American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, Olana State Historic Site, features a Persian-inspired mansion replete with art exhibits and wide-open views of the Hudson River Valley. Nestled in 100 hectares (250 acres) of natural landscape, the mansion boasts brick, wood, slate, and ceramic exterior of an asymmetrical and irregular silhouette. Take a guided tour of the house and grounds--thought to be among the most intact art designed landscapes in the United States--to admire its striking design, including amber-boarded windows and golden natural lighting. You'll have the opportunity to follow 8 km (5 mi) of garden roads, which will lead you through native woodlands, meadows, orchards, and a lake setting. • Olana is a true Hudson Valley gem. The views and history are incredible. The architecture of the home and the expanse of the property is a wonder. Take time to walk around on the grounds and enjoy the landscape and gardens. Bring a picnic basket and blanket and take in the views.
  • We didn't go in but just came for the views of the Hudson valley. It has a great vantage point to see right down in to the valley. Phones are for mid January and it was cold as balls
  • Don't overlook this place for a relaxing visit with beautiful panoramic views. A great place to visit with a group. The inside house tour is interesting, but walking the grounds is the real crown jewel. Enjoy the seasonal gardens and the tremendous views as sculpted by a reknowned landscape artist. Use one of the back trails to get a great view of the bridge, Hudson River, and mountains east of the house.
  • Such a great exoerience. Staff is so friendly. It was a real treat to have the opportunity to experience the beauty within this place.
  • What an amazing place! Adult and kids will love it. We had no idea what to expect and whole family had a good time. The grounds are worth the trip but tour the mansion. Tour guide was knowledgeable and fun. We got great pictures.
