Howe Caverns, Howes Cave

4.3
Must see · Cave · Nature / Park
Explore the limestone caves at Howe Caverns. The brick walkways, handrails, and elevators make the journey easy. The traditional tour begins at the elevators and ends with a boat ride on the Lake of Venus, an underground body of water. Consider booking an adventure tour to see the undeveloped portion of the cave. You'll be provided with a suit to protect you from the moisture. After the tour, head to the Cave House Museum of Mining & Geology, which is inside a former hotel next door. Put Howe Caverns and other Howes Cave attractions into our Howes Cave trip itinerary planning site, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • This place is a hidden gem. Ignore the negative reviews. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable- Nate was our guide for the tour. The cavern is beautifully lit up and there's lots of...  more »
  • Other than their oft-repeated claim of it being the "second most-visited natural attraction in NYS," this has very little going for it. If you expect a cave with stalactites/ stalagmites, you'll be....  more »
  • We had a 9am reservation. Paperwork said to arrive 15-30 minutes before tour time. We were more than 30 before. We were able to use the restroom and then wait. And wait and wait and wait. The...  more »

  • So let’s set the stage with, My son loves rocks. When I heard this place existed I was all for taking him here. For me a 2 hour drive set the expectation of “This better be worth it.” The cave was incredible. The tour guide was great, unfortunately some of the people in our party no so much but that is obviously not Howe Caverns fault. The boat ride was great as well inside the cave. Knowing there are two other tours which are a little more hardcore (no walkway or lighted paths) makes me excited to potentially bring my son back when he is older. The best part and biggest value for us was sluicing. They sell different size bags of “pay dirt” for you to sluice. If course I paid for the Mother Load which was $20. I was skeptical on the value but I will say it was well worth the money. The amount of stones and fossils my son found was incredible. We also did a geode cut where we paid for a geode and they cut it there for us (cutting free). Food was great as well! This place was absolutely worth the money. There is also a small adventure park with rock climbing, zip lining and other things so bring your family and head over! Oh, bring a sweatshirt for the cave, it’s Freezing!
  • Amazing, other worldly views under ground, all carved and formed by water. Easy access via elevator, bricked walkways, well lit. Kids enjoyed banter by the guide, and some of the feature names (Godzilla). Kept a 4-5 year old interested. Boat ride at end was both fun and scary for the kids. Much as I remembered from my childhood.
  • Amazing experience not only the cave tour (which is by the way excellent). Miss Deb is a wonderful host in the restaurant and the food is a delight.(Home fries are out of this world) As for the activities the Glass work studio and Gem mining experience is something special that will not be forgotten for a long time. The motel is clean and comfortable, and all and every staff member is kind and helpful.
  • We went to the caverns since it was highly rated online. It was okay. The tour guide was young and was friendly. The staff we encountered were all very friendly. The start of the tour involved broken animatronics and seemed a little tired. The caverns themselves were interesting and we liked the boat ride. It was a nice walk, and the caves were interesting. It was a little pricey overall, and the gift shop was huge with very expensive prices. It seemed like a hyped up roadside attraction. I am glad we went though, and it was good for the whole family. There were many little kids turning around with their parents in the tour groups ahead of us, and I can imagine some kids getting antsy- do take that into consideration. Also take a sweatshirt or jacket.
  • Best caverns I have ever toured. Well preserved. The size is fantastic and the walkways are well done. The tunnel was amazing twisting and turning and tight in places. So enjoyed the tour. Emily was fantastic as our guide!
