Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It was formed by a subduction zone on the Pacific coast and rests in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50mi east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence. The height assigned to Mount Hood's snow-covered peak has varied over its history. Modern sources point to three different heights: 11249ft, a 1991 adjustment of a 1986 measurement by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS), 11240ft based on a 1993 scientific expedition, and 11239ft of slightly older origin. The peak is home to 12 named glaciers and snowfields. It is the highest point in Oregon and the fourth highest in the Cascade Range. Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt, though based on its history, an explosive eruption is unlikely. Still, the odds of an eruption in the next 30 years are estimated at between 3 and 7 percent, so the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) characterizes it as "potentially active", but the mountain is informally considered dormant.

  • Beautiful mountain! There's a lot to do here, however the parking lot at the top is a little confusing. We had some troubles finding the way back down. The drive is beautiful, and there are lots of little waterfalls along the side of the road. If you're looking to hike mirror lake then you don't need to drive up mount hood
  • Great place to go in the summer and run some snow. But spendy but always fun. There are quite a few cool hiking trails headed up to the mountain.
  • The idea of reviewing a mountain is a bit odd but Mt Hood really does have something for everyone. Lower elevations bring all sorts of climates, hikes at all levels, food, drinks and activities of all sorts without being to pricy, crowded, or exclusive. It and the Mt Hood National Forest are true treasures or Oregon.
  • best mountan much better than mount pelee
  • Love this mountain. Ever since I was a kid I was admired by it. Now I got to see it in real life. This was a flyover on my way back to Texas on June 24, 2017 😍
