Mount Hood, Hood River

#1 of 13 in Winter Sports in Oregon
The Mount Hood Wilderness is a protected wilderness area inside the Mount Hood National Forest which is located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The area, covering, includes the peak of Mount Hood and its upper slopes, and ranges from temperate rain forests at the lower elevations, to glaciers and rocky ridges at higher elevations. The wilderness wraps around the mountain from west to northeast, and borders Timberline Lodge and Mount Hood Meadows ski lifts on some of the south and east slopes of the mountain.TrailsJourneys to the summit are popular, but are certainly not for everyone. Mount Hood offers experienced and novice mountaineers opportunities to traverse glaciers, snowfields, steep volcanic soil, and deal with rapidly changing and difficult to predict weather. More than 10,000 climbers annually make the attempt, making Mount Hood's summit the most visited snowclad peak in America.Numerous trails circle the mountain, from Lolo Pass on the northwest (which the Pacific Crest Trail crosses) to Cloud Cap on the northeast to the ski areas on the south. There are several historic structures (predating the wilderness designation), one of which is the remains of a stone lodge near Cairn Basin on the northwest side. Numerous pristine areas are easily accessible, such as Elk Cove on the north side of the mountain near the tree line.

  • This is one of the most breath taking sites in the Pacific Northwest. I took pictures of the mountain and it did not do it justice, From any angel it was beautiful.  more »
  • Mt. Hood in my opinion is the most beautiful mountain in the entire Pacific Northwest. For me, it's the most symmetrical mountain along with one of the only ones in the area that holds onto it's snow ...  more »
  • What a great mountain to hike! Only issue is, despite it being the 2nd most hiked glaciated volcano in the world, the trail is very difficult to find and once on the snowfield it is nonexistent until ...  more »

  • Absolutely gorgeous. You can ride the chair lifts in the summer or even ski. There's a lot of history here and places to eat. A fantastic place to bring your kids. Defiantly recommend for visitors of Oregon or residents.
  • Stunningly beautiful. We live in the Appalachian Mountains, but nothing like this around home. Very nice gift shop in the ski lodge and the drive up to Mt. Hood was very nice. If you stay on U.S. 26 going toward Crater Lake, you also pass through some very pretty high desert country. Highly recommend!
  • Very good views of the peak from the top. We drove to the top in a sedan. There are view points on the way up and also a pit lavatory on the top. We had good food early in the evening at Inn at Cooper spur.
  • Great visitors places to visit all over Mt Hood. Hike with caution due to unpredictable weather, terrain, wild life and be sure to check in at the rangers station and parking permit pass. Mt Hood a beautiful mountain to view from safe distance or up close at Timberline Lodge.
  • This was a great place to go with windells academy. Even though it was the middle of summer there was still snow. Had a great time shredding the park, and a great time looking at the view. Sweltering heat in the summer but still an awesome place to go to.
