Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu

3.5
#3 of 6 in Zoos & Aquariums in Hawaii
Thanks to Waikiki Aquarium you won’t need scuba gear to see all the magnificence of Hawaiian marine life. Established in 1904, the aquarium is one of the oldest in the United States. Since its beginning, the aquarium’s mission was to display, preserve, and study the abundance of local species. The themed exhibits include everything from corals, jellyfish, and octopuses, to turtles and seals. At one moment you’ll be admiring the beauty and the colors of Hawaiian fish, and at the next you’ll be eye-to-eye with a shark. Touch ponds provide a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. Audio tours are available with the admission, and while this aquarium might not be the biggest one, it offers great opportunities for learning and enjoyment. • There are beautiful things to see especially for the wonder of children who do not know the aquariums. When we had the chance to visit La Rochelle or Barcelona, it is sure we can be disappointed because it is very small. We took a carriage with Waikiki trolley pack which included the entrance of the zoo and aquarium so we did not pay too dear otherwise admission is a bit expensive for the delivery.

  • This is the tiniest aquarium I have ever been too, but setup is nice very clean and so many different fish and coral. I loved the jelly fish and seahorse.  more »
  • When going through take the time to look at everything and watch the screens to learn about what you are seeing otherwise you'll be done in 20 minutes and think it not worth it. I enjoyed reading abou...  more »

  • As a volunteer my opinion is a bit biased but from my experience most, if not all visitors from all different places enjoy a quiet afternoon at the aquarium. On certain days (usually during the summer or on spring break) teen volunteers run exhibitions on Early Hawaiians and the Sea. The exhibits are a bit small but beautifully maintained and vibrant. Would recommend as a short educational stop with the zoo.
  • This is more of a historic visit than a must-see on the island. The aquarium is VERY small and can be breezed through in 20 minutes. We spent 2 hours walking and enjoying the fist for my son's birthday - he had enough space to walk freely around and really enjoyed himself so I think kids definitely enjoy this spot more than the adults. It is slightly disappointing that a couple exhibits were under construction and a couple more just not operating; even the monk seal exhibit was closed! Only one small interactive area that allow people to touch sea creatures and shells, but a few open air tanks that can be misleading for little ones. The fish are beautiful, it's just too small with nearly no parking on site. Inside, there is a tiny gift shop. Items are cute but pricey. Overall, a great stopover/holdover activity for young children but other than that, it is quite lackluster. Kama'aina rate was $8 ($12 for standard admission), children under 3 are free, for what it's worth.
  • Small aquarium but they filled it with a lot of nice exhibits. My son is obsessed with Marine life and really enjoyed it. The only disappointment was the closed exhibit outside for the seals & sea lions. Would have been nice to get a discount given one of the main attractions was closed.
  • Ehhhhh. When I went last week the seals exhibit was being renovated. I wish I had been told that prior to buying a ticket. There were LOTS of children that I had to maneuver past. I didn't mind but I could see how someone would get easily frustrated/annoyed. It is a small place that does feel a little older. I went for nostalgic reasons but wouldn't have gone otherwise. It does seem like a great place for families with kids, not really a date/stroll through by yourself.
  • I was here 20 years ago and was excited to come back and share it with my family. It's still very educational and a really awesome day of chilling and learning. I literally spent a few hours just watching animals and listening to the application podcast for each exhibit. I could have spent more time relaxing and learning but I'm a nerd and my family members are not. The only thing I would add is a little cafe for those in the group that tap out early 👍
