Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu

3.5
#3 of 6 in Zoos & Aquariums in Hawaii
Thanks to Waikiki Aquarium you won’t need scuba gear to see all the magnificence of Hawaiian marine life. Established in 1904, the aquarium is one of the oldest in the United States. Since its beginning, the aquarium’s mission was to display, preserve, and study the abundance of local species. The themed exhibits include everything from corals, jellyfish, and octopuses, to turtles and seals. At one moment you’ll be admiring the beauty and the colors of Hawaiian fish, and at the next you’ll be eye-to-eye with a shark. Touch ponds provide a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. Audio tours are available with the admission, and while this aquarium might not be the biggest one, it offers great opportunities for learning and enjoyment. • My wife and I went in here after the Luau. It was very nice seeing all of the exotice fish, and other sealife on display. A good place to visit.  more »
  • An impressive living museum of coral reefs and tropical fish/sea creatures. Located in a park south of the main strip of sand, it's a beautiful location to relax and learn.  more »

  • Such a nice aquarium. Definitely would go here again. Had a good time here. The animals were neat. Don't understand why people say this place sucks. I was impressed with the place. It's sad how this place is under appreciated. Great for the kids! Yes I understand it's not the largest aquarium in the world but it's really cool. I recommend going here if you want to kill some time or just spend the day there.
  • Meticulously maintained and spotless tanks. Gorgeous reef tanks. Not too crowded even on a Saturday afternoon. Worth the $12 admission, plan on 1-2 hour visit.
  • My children loved this aquarium. It's well worth the entrance fee to give them a chance to explore and learn about the ocean and its precious resources. Plus, if you remember to bring your camera, there are priceless photo ops in every corner! Adults can learn a lot too, and simply be entertained, and leave with the good feeling of having helped support a worthy institution.
  • Great value. Lots of coral and colorful fish. Awesome jellyfish exhinit. Mostly indoors so ideal activity for a hot day.
  • My kids and I liked this small but well-maintained aquarium. As long as you don't have high expectation, I believe you will enjoy it. Explanations about coral ecosystem were excellent. Great place to learn and enjoy ocean's various creatures. Parking space near the entrance is limited but there are lots of parking space by the roadside near aquarium.

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
