  • It's hard to imagine grown men living in these small spaces for months at a time, but a very cool experience to be inside a submarine!  more »

  • The USS Bowfin is part of the historic site Pearl Harbor. You make through an audio tour a whole route by the submarine and get an impression of how it must have been in this submarine. Great to see how this submarine has worked and a part of the United States Navy. Definitely worth a visit and see how tight it within formerly with all that man must have been. Very educational!

  • This was something that was neglected in my history classes. If it was mentioned, we never talked about it. This is my first time knowing about it. Before I got on the sub, they took a picture of me. They imprinted and image of me within another picture in the Hawaiian newspaper when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I thought it was pretty steep to what they were asking for it. When they told me that the money goes back to sub on maintaining it, I bought the newspaper.
  • A MUST SEE TOUR!! This was just as good as the Arizona Memorial (no disrespect here, it's just different and more hands on). It was a very powerful and sobering experience that really took you right back to what these men did for our country. The sigh, sound and even smells of being under the water level in such small compartments is really super awesome. It's not too cramped for a regular sized person. *NOTE: One that have difficulty bending, kneeling or conditions that require a wheelchair, this is not a tour to do the lower deck areas on. You have to crawl through the submarine's lockouts and it is quite cramped at times. Another thing that is neat is that you get to play with some of the sub's gadgets freely.
  • Nice stop next to NPS area. We didn't do it the first day due to time, but the following time since we couldn't get out to the Arizona we decided to try it and glad we did. I've been on a few submarines previously, and this one is the best well kept. They were undergoing maintenance but I couldn't even tell from how great it was. You get to tour both the museum as well as submarine within and on top. It's tight quarters but the one I've been to in NY was even tighter.
  • Never really knew much about submarines in WW2 so being able to go inside one was really cool! There is a lot of information you can learn and it is a definitely a spot you want see when going to Pearl Harbor.
  • Price is ok, you can take a pretty good self guided tour of the sub. Its best to go in the morning before it gets to warm inside the sub.

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
