Religious Site Tourist Spot
The Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, also commonly known as St. Andrew's Cathedral, is a cathedral of the Episcopal Church in the United States located in the State of Hawaii. Originally the seat of the Anglican Church of Hawaii, it is now the home of the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii. It is affiliated with St. Andrew's Schools, which comprises of the main girls' K-12 school, the coeducational Queen Emma Preschool and a boys' preparatory school (elementary).HistoryKamehameha IV and Queen Emma, his queen consort, were devout members of the Church of England led by their good friend Queen Victoria. At their request, Thomas Nettleship Staley was appointed bishop in 1862. Inspired to build a place of worship in the Anglican tradition, Kamehameha IV commissioned the construction of what would later become the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. However, the king died on the feast day of Saint Andrew in 1863 before ground-breaking. Kamehameha V, the king's brother, took over the project and laid the cornerstone in honor of his predecessor on March 5, 1867. The cathedral was designed by the London architects William Slater and R. H. Carpenter, and the building process was overseen by their chief assistant Benjamin Ingelow.

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.

  • great place free admission beautiful inside and outside. i only caught on fire twice an my eyes finally stopped bleeding once i got back in car
  • Great architecture free to walk in. Worth a stop if you're near by. Free
  • The Cathedral boasts 8 tower change ringing bells that were a redundant set in England. Experienced ringers are always welcome. The Aeolian Skinner pipe organ's 133 ranks are approximately one third Walker digital which are seamlessly integrated into the sound. Services have varied over the years anywhere from traditional "middle of the road" Episcopal to fairly high church with many chanted prayers. The church has an excellent choir which sings classic choral literature. The church bulletins are informative and will guide you through the services. There is a monthly Choral Evensong Sertvice which is almost all sung. It's on my "must see" list whenever I'm in Honolulu.
  • Very beautiful both inside and outside.
  • Beautiful place with it's deep roots in Hawaiian History.
