Moanalua Gardens Park, Honolulu

3.9
#15 of 35 in Parks in Honolulu
Celebrate the famed Hitachi tree and view lesser-known plants when you visit Moanalua Gardens Park. The 9 hectare (24 acre) park is known as the home of the massive umbrella-shaped monkeypod tree, famous in Japan as the Hitachi tree. Have a picnic in the shade, and if you time your visit right, watch some hula dancing in the park. Stop by the Kamehameha V Cottage while you are there, once the home of Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, who became King Kamehameha V. Head to the gift shop before you leave if you want to purchase items with the Hitachi tree logo on it. • It was the old cottage of kamehameha. Visit Bonnie's landscaped park to the Summit. Really nice trees on the wide lawn ... A few hundred years has seemed to have been a bird's wing. Day even hotter sitting in the shade of a tree, so so cool. Children can play is so much nicer.

  • A small park but really well kept and very convienent to get to. Nice open green space for picnics, field games between friends and family (frisbee, catch, etc.) and a very short walk from a nice dog park and basketball courts. Beautiful old trees and some traditional Japanese style buildings. Large old tree limbs have been made into interesting places to sit and relax. $3.00 to get in but if the little gift shop is closed it is free.
  • Beautiful garden that can be a great place for photo shoots. It costs $1 for military and native Hawaiians to get in, $3 for everyone else. There's also a small parking fee if you use their lot.
  • Large field to play around in. Nothing fancy, but enough to relax and enjoy for the locals that live near by. Little gift shop.
  • Pretty botanical gardens with large monkeypod trees in an open field and fishponds and flowers around the sides. Famous for the "Hitachi tree" that appeared in Hitatchi TV commercials (in Japan). Lots of Japanese tour busses visit here. $3 admission fee.
  • Good place to let your young children run around lots play area.
