Nature / Park
Celebrate the famed Hitachi tree and view lesser-known plants when you visit Moanalua Gardens Park. The 9 hectare (24 acre) park is known as the home of the massive umbrella-shaped monkeypod tree, famous in Japan as the Hitachi tree. Have a picnic in the shade, and if you time your visit right, watch some hula dancing in the park. Stop by the Kamehameha V Cottage while you are there, once the home of Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, who became King Kamehameha V. Head to the gift shop before you leave if you want to purchase items with the Hitachi tree logo on it. Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.

  • Beautiful parkland perfect for a picnic. Very clean and plenty of shade. Unfortunately Perhaps food vans would be great addition to this area.  more »
  • Great park and great views Roadside local vendors also come here, so you can buy cold drinks, hats, that sort of thing. Public toilets available also.  more »
  • No dogs allowed. This is very nice and relaxing area to visit. The trees bring shade here. The grass is very green. It nice to wonder about.  more »

  • Very nice place. Easy to get to by car. By bus or foot I would say try somewhere else unless you know your way around there VERY well. If you want to learn some history about that area there are plenty old timers willing and ready to talk story; for that alone its worth the trip.
  • It's peaceful, nice park for a picnic and there's this Japanese tree that lots of Japanese tourists goes there to see beside seeing the park.
  • A very beautiful place with huge amounts of open space. A great place to spend a while with the family.
  • This is completely out of the way and many people (other than Japanese tourists) will possibly get here. It's known in Japan for the home of "Hitachi tree". It's a tree that the Japanese company, Hitachi, used in their commercials during 1973. It's now become symbolic of the company and for this reason, many Japanese tourist come to seek it out. If you're reading this and make it here, you'll find you're probably one of the few tourists who isn't Japanese.
  • There was less here than I expected. Yes, it has a few really large trees that have become symbols for some companies, but beyond that there wasn't much to see.... basically you get more at many other locations in Oahu where there isn't an entrance fee.
