#4 of 11 in Beaches in Honolulu
Picnic, walk, run, and have an active day at Kapiolani Regional Park, Hawaii's oldest and largest public park. Just beyond a residential neighborhood and near the beach, this 120 hectare (300 acre) park has large grassy areas, palm trees, and banyan trees. The park, listed on the state's Historic Register, houses an outdoor concert area for over 8,000 people and a zoo. On many weekends local artists showcase their crafts, which you can purchase. • We went to houtreeranai, walked. From Waikiki to stretch your legs worth an attempt. Close look at the Diamond Head power! Even less pleasant people is a large park, just nice.

  • We walked along past the Waikiki beach to this park, and we were glad we did. The park itself is right next to the beach but the activities we saw as we walked along included people sunbathing/ lying ...  more »

  • There are occasional cultural festivals/events held at this park. Parking can sometimes be an issue as the main lot by the Waikiki Shell/Zoo will fill up instantly when there's an event. But overall the park is pretty well kept and is pretty safe as far as I know.
  • Beautiful condo over looking the ocean. The view is to die for. First class Condo. Kapiolani Park is a wonderful place to jog or exercise. This park is right across from our Condo. The zoo and botanical garden are located in this park.
  • Kapiolani Park is the people's park. Everyone comes and play here. The rich, the poor, the tourist, the locals, the bbq people, the sport people, and everybody! I mean everybody. It's kind of like the Golden gate park in SF or Central Park in NY minus the historic buildings, bridges and ponds. The royalty's playground has long been demolished and the lily ponds been filled to make room for a flat playing field for sports. Look up those historic photos of Kapiolani Park and you'll be surprised what was there before. There was even once been a horse race track. Those Hawaiian royalties must love England. Enjoy the park, everybody.
  • Convenient park. Clean restrooms. Big grass area is nice for bbq or picnic next to the beach. Lifeguards at the beach make it family friendly.
  • The park is big and open. There are a few free parking lots and a bunch of street parking on the Diamond Head side but most parking on the beach side is metered. The restrooms were clean.

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
