The Waterfront, Homestead
Categories: Shopping Malls, Shopping
The Waterfront is a super-regional open air shopping mall spanning the three boroughs of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall near Pittsburgh. The shopping mall sits on land once occupied by U.S. Steel's Homestead Steel Works plant, which closed in 1986. It has a gross leasable area of 700000sqft in "The Waterfront" and 400000sqft in "The Town Center." The development officially opened in 1999. More development continued into the early 21st century. The Waterfront is accessible from the Parkway East via the Homestead High-Level Bridge, now known as the Homestead Grays Bridge. Pennsylvania Route 837, which runs through the town of Homestead also connects drivers to The Waterfront via Amity Street and Waterfront Drive.HistoryFrom its storied past, only smokestacks remain on the site that once helped to give Pittsburgh the name "Steel City."In 2005, Industrial Workers of the World celebrated their 100th Anniversary, having formed in 1905 out of the palpable labor struggles of that era. The local celebration included events held at the Pump House on the site of The Waterfront. http://www.iww.org/en/taxonomy/term/244/all?page=2Make The Waterfront a part of your Homestead vacation plans using our Homestead itinerary maker.

First time I have been in Homestead in 30 years. It is amazing how this area has been cleaned up. Old rusty decaying mills are now a modern Shopping Complex. They even left some parts up like chimneys... read more »
This is our favorite little outdoor mall in Pittsburgh. We're from Columbus, Ohio so it reminds me of a super mini Easton. It'd be a total 5 star if there was a convenient way to merge the complex on the east end of Waterfront Drive with the West End with a shuttle or something. It's not exactly safe to walk from Macy's to Marshall's or vice versa, but it is an easy enough drive. The restaurant selection is good and has options that are a little more upscale or local to Pittsburgh. Loews theater is my favorite part of the waterfront. By far my favorite theater in Pittsburgh. The major downfall is getting in and out of there. It's a little confusing, but what part of our city's rivers, bridges, tunnels...is easy to navigate? Highly recommend for a day shopping trip..or a weekend! The Courtyard hotel there is a lovely spot for an overnight getaway or nice staycation.
My favorite way to enjoy an evening at the Waterfront is to get a burger at Burgatory, then shop a little bit, followed by a movie at the AMC Loews theater. Waterfront is a great place for a date night!
Even though the Waterfront has the typical sprawling stores, theres a kind of charm of the location. It's a great place to walk around and explore. One of the best trails are near by too!
This place has an awesome aura in the evening. Perfect picnic spot. Awesome theater nearby (AMC Loews).
Nice outdoor shopping. Only problem is the 6+ months of crappy weather.
