Knaus Berry Farm, Homestead

4.6
In 1924 brothers Jess and Harley Knaus moved from Missouri to Miami. They came for the construction work, helping to build Miami's first boom. When the hurricane of 1926 ended that, they returned to their farming roots and began raising vegetables on an 80-acre farm near what is today the Homestead Air Reserve Base.

By 1934 the farm was doing well enough that the brothers could build identical two-story houses a short distance from where Knaus Berry Farm is today. Jess's sons Russell and Ray, founders of Knaus Berry Farm, spent their childhood there.

In 1942 (with the Germans blowing up shipping off the Florida coast) the Knauses decided they were too close to the war front and moved back to Missouri.

Around 1954 Russell decided to return to the family farmlands in Florida. He began raising strawberries, and did well enough that Ray joined him in 1956. They set up a small road side stand just a couple houses (one of the houses built by Jess and Harley) east of the current Knaus Berry Farm location to sell their strawberries. Some of the strawberries were sold through a broker who commented to Barbara, Ray's wife, after tasting some of her cookies, that they were good enough to sell. The idea of a bakery was born.

Over the years, along with the strawberries, assorted baked goods, vegetables, and ice cream have become at part of Knaus Berry Farm, also U-Pick strawberries and tomatoes, availability permitting.

Knaus Berry Farm has been at its current location since 1959. Ray’s daughters, Rachel and Susan with their husbands now oversee the day to day operation of KBF.

  • We stopped while in the area to try the milk shakes. Within the group we got the cinnamon roll milkshake and a strawberry one. Both were great. We thought about trying the cinnamon rolls... but the li...  more »
  • Is this what people stand in line for? Not much selection and outrageous prices. The price of strawberries was triple what I am used to paying.  more »
  • Cinnamon buns were excellent, although the top was not caramelized, nor topped with any nuts. Definitely not worth the 25 minute wait. The produce was very fresh and the strawberries very flavourful. ...  more »

  • Fresh baked goods taste like homemade. Strawberries that have flavor. Fresh greens and other vegetables. Don't forget to try their strawberry shakes, yum. There are three separate lines. The baked good line has the most people in it. There is U-pick as well.
  • A Redland jewel with lots of history. The cinnamon rolls are a community favorite! The pecan rolls are delicious. You can pick your own strawberries and there is lots of fresh produce in the market. Knaus also roasts their own coffee beans. If you like savory breads, try the garlic bread. The German chocolate cake is delicious, too. I tried the shoo-fly pie, it is a PA region favorite but I didn't love it. You can also buy ice cream shakes in vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.
  • This truly is one of Miami’s best gems! I have so many memories of going here as a child. With the popularity that it has gained over the years it is best to go during the week first thing in the morning. The lines get very long during the weekend. It’s fun to go pick the strawberries in the fields when the season arrives. I don’t have to tell you, but the cinnamon rolls are absolutely amazing!
  • We were nearby on vacation from the other side of the state and Google said we should come here. The reviews were right. The cinnamon rolls were exactly as good as they say. Bring cash (they don't take cards) and an appetite. While I've heard the lines can be an issue we were the only customers at 9am on a random Tuesday.
  • A Must Go! The best ever cinnamon rolls.. Simply delicious!!! The cheese bread, the garlic bread, the strawberries and shakes! Line can be longer than expected, but is so worth the wait! It's such a reward! If you there early, might take you an hour. We got there around 8a and were done by 8:45am with buns and a shake. Weather was perfect! Everything they sell is delicious, but be prepared to spend.
