Homer Spit, Homer

4.6
#1 of 9 in Beaches in Alaska
Alaska is known for its natural phenomena, and Homer Spit is among the most remarkable. No one is certain how this Kachemak Bay landmark came into existence. A strong earthquake in 1964 significantly reduced its size and killed most of its lush vegetation. But that didn't stop the spot from turning into a popular tourist destination lined with shops and restaurants. Choose from a range of activities such as boat trips, camping, fishing, kayaking, and walks down the long beach. You can access the spit by a car, but parking lots might be crowded. Make Homer Spit a part of your Homer vacation plans using our Homer day trip planning website .

  • If you're looking for beach, beer, and bait then you need to visit the Homer Spit. The Homer Spit is a great place to pitch a tent or park an RV and spend the next few days on the Homer Spit. You can get an early morning fishing charter trip and be back at lunch or by dinner. Hit the Salty Dawg Saloon for a victory drink with friends. If you want to relax and do very little you could paddle along the Homer Spit or get a water taxi and paddle around islands South of the Homer Spit. Maybe you rather shop or eat? The Homer Spit has plenty of small local stores and restaurants that should make your day. If you want to look around the rest of Homer then consider getting a ride with the Homer Trolley. The Homer Trolley will drop you off and pick you up all day, but make sure you have a schedule with you. If you setup camp at the Homer Spit you can truly have an adventure across Homer.
  • Camped on the Homer Spit at Heritage TV Park. Gorgeous view of the mountains, Kachemak Bay and 4 glaciers. Went Halibut fishing in Cook’s Inlet. Awesome adventure. Loved walking on the Spit, shopping, people watching, fishing, etc.
