Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, Hilton Head

(4.4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
A place of no motorized vehicles, few people, and thousands of birds, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge covers an area of over 1,600 hectares (4,000 acres) between the mainland and Hilton Head Island. Located on land once managed as a private game preserve, this area includes four islands, only the largest of which is open to the public. Most of the refuge consists of tidal creeks and salt marshes, sheltering diverse plant and animal life that includes white ibis, herons, egrets, white-tailed deer, and alligators. To access the best spots for bird watching and photography, bring lots of drinking water and join one of the guides for an early morning hike around the refuge. • After lunch my two college-age sons and their roommates and I headed out to the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge where I put 13,354 steps on my pedometer before leaving as dinner hour approach...  more »
  • This area is so beautiful. We thought it was bike trails, like we are used to at other refuges. It is a dirt trail, lots of heavy rocks....probably brought in from Matthew. We did make it to the Ibis ...  more »
  • Beautiful nature walks, lots of wildlife (watch out for the gators!) and plenty of places to sit and relax when you need a break. Only downfall is that there are no restrooms.  more »

  • Great wildlife park that is definitely a hotspot for birds. I have spotted an alligator snapper turtle in the past and plenty of deer. Biking is one of the best ways to cover a lot of the trails, but if you go walking and pay attention to the small beauty this place has to offer you won't be disappointed. Beautiful insects, flowers, lizards, birds and such. Bring water and prepare for mosquitoes when walking through the forest trails.
  • Surprisingly few other people. The first mile or two of the trail isn't amazing, so consider setting aside more time or bringing a bike to explore farther into the area.
  • Watching the birds come to roost of an evening in the rookery not far from the entrance is amazing. There is also a walk Way Around The Rookery as well as all kinds of hidden paths that take you through the woods out to the surf. This Refuge has everything
  • There were many opportunities for walking and biking. Many types of birds were on the island in its various ponds, as well as a few alligators.
  • It was sweet. Quiet. The off season. The best time to visit for this sort of reprieve. It was perfect, with my companions. Synergetic, a perfect time of the year for romance. The island and sparsely occupied beaches, and this one, the refuge, at sunset, caps the entire experience to perfection. Sprinkled with periodic bliss.
