Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, Hilton Head

4.5
#5 of 14 in Parks in Hilton Head
A place of no motorized vehicles, few people, and thousands of birds, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge covers an area of over 1,600 hectares (4,000 acres) between the mainland and Hilton Head Island. Located on land once managed as a private game preserve, this area includes four islands, only the largest of which is open to the public. Most of the refuge consists of tidal creeks and salt marshes, sheltering diverse plant and animal life that includes white ibis, herons, egrets, white-tailed deer, and alligators. To access the best spots for bird watching and photography, bring lots of drinking water and join one of the guides for an early morning hike around the refuge. A visit to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Hilton Head trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • A piece of heaven on earth! It was a wonderful place to walk around on. A fantastic place to view wildlife. We saw a snowy egret rookery, the alligators waiting for the eggs to fall, many different types of waterfowl. It was like parting a curtain to a time long long ago. I can't recommend this place enough! We went back for a second visit at sunrise and were not disappointed. A fantastic experience!
  • Amazing trails! Very good for walking, pushing a stroller/wheelchair. Leaving the trail to wander in the salt flats is at your own risk. Take plenty of water and salty snacks, limited shade. Plan on at least two hours.
  • So many beautiful birds. Amazing rookeries. Bring lots of water , sunscreen and bug spray. Lots of walking or ride your bike.
  • Great place to walk or bike. There are a lot of unique creatures like crabs, cranes, and sometimes a gator or two. There is a viewing area a mile down the trail which was neat. You can get a closer look at some of the unique birds. Overall great place to walk and bike around
  • Beautiful natural protected refuge. Take a bike. Unless your a mid level hiker. No water or facilities of any kind.
