Rainbow Falls, Hilo

4.2
#2 of 23 in Parks in Hilo
Visit Wiluku River State Park to witness Rainbow Falls, the 24 m (80 ft) waterfalls famous for the magnificent rainbows that shine through their mist. These falls, know to locals by their Hawaiian name, Waianuenue, rush down over a lava cave, which is considered to be the home of the ancient Hawaiian goddess Hina. At the foot of the falls, wild ginger and monstera plants surround a large pool. Naturally, the rainbows are especially strong after a rainstorm. • While in Hilo don’t miss this stop. Parking lot close to first look out. Take steps up next level to look across falls. You can continue to hike further in for more. It is your choice. It is 6 minutes...  more »

  • Beautiful falls and a very easy hike. The path is fully paved with railings that whole way that only takes about 30min to complete. You do have to pay for parking, so I suggest bringing a lunch to eat after the hike, which can be done at one of the many picnic tables with a very of the falls.
  • There are lots of things you can do. You can get to literally right next to the water fall if you are adventurous. There are a number hiking trails around that are also fantastic. Additionally, at the top of water fall, the creak up there was also quite pretty and plenty of rocks you can hop around ad well.
  • We went back about three times before the sun was right to get the rainbow - but it was very pretty every time. I like the story behind it, too. But there wasn't a particularly nice walk that we found, mostly just drive up and then look at the waterfall
  • Great falls to visit. Fairly easy to view not a lot of stairs. There is on viewing location where the stairs are uneven but a great place to visit.
  • Simply: beautiful. On a sunny day you can see a rainbow at the bottom of the waterfall. Handicapped accessible (except for top part of the fall). Has bathroom facilities.
