Liliuokalani Park and Gardens, Hilo

4.5
#3 of 17 in Parks in Hilo
Garden Nature / Park
Take a break from Hawaii's busy tourist areas with a visit to Liliuokalani Park and Gardens, situated just southeast of downtown Hilo. The main feature of this 12 hectare (30 acre) park is an Edo-style Japanese garden, one of the largest such features outside Japan. Built in the early 1900s, the garden features several bridges, koi ponds, pagodas, statues, and a traditional Japanese teahouse. Adjacent to the park you’ll find a small picnic area locally known as the "Coconut Island," once the site of an ancient healing temple. Connected to the park by a footbridge, the island offers unobstructed views of downtown Hilo and its picturesque bay. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Liliuokalani Park and Gardens and many more Hilo attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Hilo trip itinerary builder.

  • The garden itself is pretty, but it's more of a wandering path than something with pretty sights. We happened upon it, but it's nothing to write home about.  more »
  • We went walking around the shoreline abd we stumbled across this park and I'm so glad we did. The park itself is laid out nicely and is a really lovely stroll. All the plants are so cool and well kept...  more »
  • Nice Japanese garden (right near Castle Hilo Hawaiian hotel), and if your lucky, a "Walk with a Doc" guide will be there to give you local knowledge on the garden :)  more »

  • Love this park. It's nice to run around. My toddler likes to stomp in the tide pools and pick up rocks. Sometimes I just sit under the trees and enjoy the breeze. Scenery/view is amazing. All the tour buses stop here. Great for a game of tag. Public bathrooms are clean. Good for a Pokemon walk, lots of stops, popular for lures.
  • Love this place! Great for walking, watching the ocean & just chilling. Cool note; largest Japanese style gardens in the US.
  • Loved this local park. We stopped for a picnic lunch and walked around the park viewing the fauna and waves. No beach but great urban park with ice cream and beer nearby.
  • I love taking my puppy walking thru this park.Large area and lots of shade.. just be careful because not all dog owners are courteous enough to clean up after their dog
  • Historical place/garden PREVIOUSLY owned by HAWAII'S FORMER QUEEN LILIUOKALANI but donated to da people of Hawaii. A place for family picnics, meeting new/friends, a place for even fishing n one of east HAWAII'S tourist attraction. Sometimes events are held there like remembering the pass queen's reign n birthday. Great view of downtown Hilo . It's location is near hotels, golf courses, store, restaurants ect.,... It's basically in the middle of everything in Hilo town. So visitors that come to the island of Hawaii come check it
