Liliuokalani Gardens, Hilo

4.4
#3 of 16 in Parks in Hilo
Take a break from Hawaii's busy tourist areas with a visit to Liliuokalani Gardens, situated just southeast of downtown Hilo. The main feature of this 12 hectare (30 acre) park is an Edo-style Japanese garden, one of the largest such features outside Japan. Built in the early 1900s, the garden features several bridges, koi ponds, pagodas, statues, and a traditional Japanese teahouse. Adjacent to the park you’ll find a small picnic area locally known as the "Coconut Island," once the site of an ancient healing temple. Connected to the park by a footbridge, the island offers unobstructed views of downtown Hilo and its picturesque bay. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Liliuokalani Gardens and many more Hilo attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Hilo trip itinerary builder.

While staying in Hilo, this park was close and gave good views on city and mountains to east. Nice Japanese style park (not as formal). Lots of people and local are nice. There are feral mongoose in park so wild life is limited. Always wet. Last tsunami was in 1960.

Liliuokalani Gardens is a Japanese style garden that is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery around you. There are many paths to walk around and view the various features in the park, a lovely tea house that was built by the Urusenke Tea Society in Kyoto and is host to an annual celebration with Hula, cultural activities and food for the family. Liliuokalani Gardens is also very close to Suisan's Fish Market so I would recommend picking up some Poke and sitting by the ocean side or in one of the many pavilions.
