  • The Kaumana Caves State Park is right off Kaumana Drive near the 4-mile marker just a little distance from downtown Hilo and not too far from the University of Hawaii-Hilo campus. If you want to exper...  more »
  • A cave very closed to the road. What is neat about it is just how red the ground is inside the cave. Very colorful contrast with the black volcanic rock. Nearby you can picnic.
  • Not sure why they call it a Caves Park since lave tubes are not caves and this portion of the tube was exposed due to a roof collapse--the opening now called "skylight." You can walk right down into t...  more »

  • I enjoyed it. need proper shoes and also torch. Map maybe good to have including history of caves
  • Amazing and scary!!!! You must be ready with good shoes and few flashlights. When we went there were absolutely no people and no guides you just go alone into completely dark natural cave. Its awesome! We didn't go all the way we went to one side a bit and then returned and went to the left side which is long and beautiful we walked for about 20min and came back
  • The farthest I've even gone in was about a half hour (don't know distance) and it was mostly wide enough to walk or crouch. At that point a group of teens came out of the far depths and told us they'd been in there walking at least an hour before they returned back. They looked to me like they were telling the truth with how tired they were. How much adventure you want to get out of this cave is up to you, just don't go alone.
  • Cool experience overall but the parking lot is across the busy road and there are no crosswalks. Dangerous for our kids to cross.
  • Very cool place to explore
