Ayr Mount is a Federal style plantation house located east of Hillsborough, in Orange County, North Carolina, the United States of America.
In 1799, William Kirkland (born in Ayr, Scotland) bought 500acre east of Hillsborough. Circa 1815, he had a home built for himself, his wife, Margaret, and their children. The brick dwelling consists of a two-story, three bay main block flanked by one-story, two bay wings. It features a one-story, full width front porch added about 1894.
The Kirkland family lived at Ayr Mount for four generations, with the last Kirkland, Mrs. Samuel (Emily) Kirkland, residing at Ayr Mount until 1985.
The property had gone through several owners prior to Kirkland's purchase of the property, the most well-known being William Few, Jr., whose father, William Few, Sr., had a house built on the property c. 1764.
Today, Ayr Mount is a publicly accessible historic site located on 265acre. It is owned and operated by Classical American Homes Preservation Trust. The home has been furnished with Federal period antiques and decorative art, including some original Kirkland furnishings. Ayr Mount features guided house tours and the one-mile (1.6 km) hiking trail the "Poet's Walk."

  • Ayr Mount is one of my favorite places to go for walks. The path is well maintained & the grounds are nicely tended. It's cool that a lot of the trees are labeled so you can learn how to identify them. I like that the trail follows along the Eno River for a bit. I've also been on numerous picnics near the pond. Ayr Mount would be a great place to have a outdoor party or wedding!
  • I didn't go inside the house and get a tour, but I thought the gardens were absolutely beautiful and walking on the paths of the forest made me feel like I was in a fairy garden! I am definitely going back and I hope I have just as much fun.
  • The grounds are gorgeous. My friend and I had a personal guided tour of the house. The guide was well educated in the history of the house and was always happy to answer my weird questions. The house itself was in immaculate condition with original peices through out. 10 of 10 would reccomend!
  • Beautiful little nature walk by the Eno River after walking past the house and rolling grounds of the historic house. I think the house can be toured by appointment. I brought my two toddlers there with a stroller. It was surprisingly easy to handle my stroller on the unpaved pathways. My walking toddler had a great time. There are guard rails where the trail touches the Eno River, but they are only marking the edge. They won't keep a person (toddler) from going past them. Not a problem, but just FYI.
  • Very interesting history about the house, family, and life in NC at the time the house was built. The docent was very knowledgeable and invited questions from visitors. The house and grounds are meticulously maintained and the walking trail on the grounds allows locals and visitors to enjoy the beauty of the property overlooking the Eno River.
